Writing Sample Task 1 #74 – Age populations

The bar graph shows the percent of total population 65+ years old in the US between 1900 and 2000.

During this century the total percentage of elderly in USA almost tripled, it went from 4,3% in 1900 to 12,4% in 2000. The number of people aged 65-74 is by far the most significant among aged people. The figure was 2.9% and has a steadily growth from 1900 to 1960, where it achieved 6.1%, where this remained for 2 years. By the year 2000 65-y year old people were 6.5% of the population.

The number of people older than 75 is divided in two groups, 75-84 people and 85+, and they were in 1900 1.0% and 0.2% respectively of the total population. These two categories of people remained fairly steady between 1900 and 1190. The figure began to rise more significantly in 1940. In 2010, people 75-85 were 4,4% of the population while 85+ achieved 1,5% of the population.

Overall, the graph shows that today people in the U.S. can expect to live longer than in 1900.
