There was a school festival last weekend. All the students planned and organized various kinds of events such as creating a traditional Japanese garden, a fortuneteller’s house or a workshop of aromatic candles or balloon modelings in their classrooms. Also, there were special exhibitions of photographs, works of calligraphy, a model railroad, Christmas cakes, and so on and so forth.

Their parents prepared curry, fried noodles with lots of vegetables or pita bread as well. Pita is a small round bread stuffed with meat.

On that day, I watched the Wadaiko (Japanese drum) show by boy students. They were wearing traditional Japanese "happi" coats, and did a wonderful performance on the stage. I was fascinated by their showy drumstick-work and multiple beat techniques. Some of them were shouting with the drum all the time.

Soon after the show, I approached my students, and said, “You were so cool! I became a big fan of Wadaiko.”
