My opinion of the difference between 小さな and 小さい
<Grammar>
'小さな' has to be used with a noun.
'な' is so-called '連体詞.'
'小さい' works as a 'イadjective.'

<Meaning>
「小さい」means directly 'small.' and it sometimes has a negative image.
「彼の家は小さい」sounds he is not rich.
If your friend tells your another friend like this, maybe he though you are not rich..
「(〇〇の家は) 小さかった」.
In my opinion, when you use 小さい, your point of view is the third party's one and objective.

「小さな」has to have a noun.
it is vaguer than 小さい.
It is often used to describe one's feeling, thoughts, and perspectives.
彼は小さな家にすんでいる。it sounds like this.
He lives in a small house. Maybe he is not rich and may not. The person telling this doesn't care about if he is rich in this line. It depends on other contexts, though.
