Set in British India, the poem is a praise of a Hindu water-carrier who saves an English soldier's life, yet is soon killed and shot. At the end of the poem, the soldier regrets his abusive behaviour towards Din. In fact, the poem is much remembered by its finale line: You're a better man that I am, Gunga Din. often quoted in the UK in reaction to self-praise.
