The old mausoleum had stood sentry for the deceased family for more than 2 centuries. It would now contain the last of the family's lineage; the old eccentric coot had passed on with no heirs to his name. To say the family was strange would be putting it mildly, but the family never posed any problems to the community where it possessed one of the oldest, if not the oldest, lineages.
And the city had evolved much in those two centuries, turning from a remote Civil War outpost to a bustling center of commerce, with the advent of automobiles and other modes of transportation. Blessed with good fortune as well as a thriving economy, it had turned into the regional place to be.
I needed a spot to put the start of my short story for a second. :)
