The sentence structure is good.
maybe you can say "British sailors often carried limes to prevent scurvy."

this way you can be more descriptive

I didn't know the Japanese called us Limeys - I've only ever heard American people say it.

I would like to ask you, Does the word "Limey" sound rude or impolite to people in UK?
Because, I was surprised to know the meaning of "Limey", which I had never heard of since I had begun to learn English.
Maybe, most of the Japanese don't use this expression.
I just found during my study about "Scurvy".
