Where do you think your country is?
If you're American, it's on the American continent. If you're Japanese, it's on the islands close to China. Blah, blah, blah. These answers are right, of course, but they're kind of wrong.
These answers assume your country is outside you, containing you from the outside. Yes, geographically. But in your mind, you country exist within your "self", or more clearly, your "ego".
It's because your country is part of you that you're offended by hearing somebody mock your country. It's hard to say that it's none of your business. It's the defence mechanism of you ego.
This may sound bullshit, but it can explain many (stupid) human behaviours, I think.

If you're American, it's on the North American continent.
There is also a continent named South America.
If you're Japanese, it's on some islands close to China.
"The islands close to China" means all of the islands which are close to China. You are only talking about some of those, not all of them.
These answers are right/correct, of course, but they're (also) wrong in a way.
That's true, geographically.
But in your mind, your country exists within your "self", or more clearly, your "ego". [Alternative: But your country is also a part of yourself, or, to be more precise, (of) your ego.]
It's a defence mechanism of your ego.
Saying "the defense mechanism" means that your ego has one and only one defense mechanism.
"Defence" is a UK English spelling. In US English, the word is spelled "defense".
Many people use "nation" to describe a group of people with a common self-identity. Thus, some people distinguish between what their country does and what their nation does. We see this in the US today in that there are very sharp divisions between people who support President Obama and those who do not. Each may treat things the US did when different people were President as if they were done by some other country.
It is important to remember that much of this behavior is encouraged and reinforced by people with their own private agendas. Their strategy is based on research in psychology and sociology. Both sides try to pretend that they are not manipulating people, but know exactly what they are doing.
