This entry is only for those who are ready to cry.

Hi, everyone. Today, I'd like to introduce a beautiful Japanese song titled 言葉にできない (I can't find words). It was in 1982 written by 小田和正, who was the lead vocal of the group オフコース. His clear voice fits the pure message of the lyrics and the touching melody of this song. Although the オフコース ended their activity in 1989, 小田和正 has been one of the most successful and respected singer/composer in Japan since then.

In 1999, the insurance company called 明治生命 made a series of commercial messages featuring this moving song. Below is one of them based on a real story of a family. After this commercial, the story was published in the form of a book and later re-created into a TV drama in 2004.

Don't watch this video, if you are not ready to cry. It's just a TV commercial but it's so moving, being full of unconditional love. The video is followed by my Japanese-to-English translations of the texts shown in the video.

Thank you.

Below is my Japanese-to-English translation of the lyrics of the original song. Oda Kazumasa's lyrics are one of the most beautiful usage of Japanese language, I believe. In the TV commercial, the last part of the song indicated with an asterisk was used.

言葉にできない(1982年)
作詞、作曲 : 小田和正
オフコース

I can't find my words.
Written by Oda Kazumasa

終わる筈のない愛が途絶えた いのち尽きてゆくように
ちがう きっとちがう 心が叫んでる
The love which can never end has just stopped, just as a life is about to cease.
No! Maybe not! My heart is screaming.

ひとりでは生きてゆけなくて
また 誰れかを愛している
こころ 哀しくて 言葉にできない
I can't live on my own, so I've found myself loving somebody again.
My heart being too sad, I can't find my words...

lalala…… 言葉にできない
lalala..... no, I can't find my words.

せつない嘘をついては いいわけをのみこんで
果たせぬ あの頃の夢は もう消えた
Every time I told silly lies, I had to try to avoid excuses.
My old dreams which I couldn't make come true have gone by now.

誰れのせいでもない
自分がちいさすぎるから
それが くやしくて 言葉にできない
I can't blame anybody else.
It's just because I'm so timid.
I'm so much ashamed that I can't find my words

lalala…… 言葉にできない
lalala..... no, I can't find my words.

あなたに会えて ほんとうによかった
嬉しくて 嬉しくて 言葉にできない
It is most delightful that I met you.
I'm so happy and happy that I can't find my words.

lalala…… 言葉にできない
lalala.... no, I can't find my words.

In the above translations, when the original Japanese only have single nominal or verbal phrase, lacking the structure of a whole sentence, I tried to keep the nuance in English. I am not sure whether it worked well. I'm looking forward to your comments.
