Out of the blue my four-year-old daughter, who was seated on the passengers seat, asked me in a confident way "The bear eats fish, right?" I glanced over at her, while being careful about the front view. "Sure thing. Probably they like salmon, don't they?" I replied, to which she asked me again "Why salmon!?"

“The bear” ---> If you were talking about a specific bear, I guess this would be okay. But I don't see that in the text :/
