英名: Japanese Crane; Red-crowned Crane; Manchurian Crane

オーストラリアにもいます。(Australia also has them.)
オーストラリアにはいません。(Australia doesn't have them.)

But it's not possible to say:

オーストラリアにいません。

As you know, オーストラリアにいません。is also correct. But は could imply two things being compared. It sounds like " Japan has it while Australia doesn't have it.

Thanks cecilさん! After you commented I edited, adding "See A Field Guide to the Birds of Japan, page 122f." I'll try to add these page references from now on. But I also want to build up the courage to say more about them in Japanese! :'(

When we have the traditional celebrations in Japan, the gifts given to the guests will be used a designt of "Crane and Turtle".
And it's "crane" means "Tancho cranes".
In the Japanese lifestyle "Tancho crane" is very a traditional and familiar bird.

The following is an explanation of "Tancho crane" on Japanese dictionary.

たんちょう ―ちやう 0 【丹頂】
ツル目ツル科の鳥。国産鳥類では最も大形の鳥で、全長140センチメートルほど。全体が白色で、喉から頸にかけてと、翼の内側の風切り羽の部分が黒色。頭頂は赤く裸出する。北海道東部の個体群は周年生息し、本州や九州ではまれに飛来する。姿が優美であり、長寿でめでたい鳥として、日本では古くから画題とされ、親しまれてきた。特別天然記念物。絶滅危惧種。丹頂づる。

All the not-very-young Japanese people are really familiar with the bird.

It was on the back of the 1000 yen bill from 1984 to 2004.

I haven't seen wild tancho yet. You can only see them at a particular part of Hokkaido.

丹頂と言って北海道の釧路に住んでます。丹とは赤い色のことであり、頂は頂きのことです。頭のてっぺんが赤い鶴なので丹頂鶴と呼び、日本人は縁起の良い鳥として大事にしてます。鶴は千年亀は万年と言って長生きの象徴になってますが、鶴も亀もそんなに生きませんよね( ^)o(^ )
