I don't know when I can use the word "by" in a situation when I talk about ways and means.

If you could give me a few example sentences, it would be very helpful.

Let me make a sentence here.

1. You tried to go somewhere secretly by getting me to stop sending messages, didn't you?>correct?

2. You tried to go somewhere secretly getting me to stop sending messages, didn't you?>correct?

3. I tried to be calm by controlling myself, even though I was sad at the time.

4. I tried to be calm controlling myself, even though I was sad at the time.

I don't know when you can skip using "by" just using "ing form".
