I will be part of "The Vagina Monologues" in Osaka next year. This is a bilingual event, and the audience is Japanese local and people from other countries. This will be my second time to join the event.
Last time, I played a role from one monologue which is called "My Vagina Was My Village", in Japanese. This time, I was asked again if I could perform in Japanese, but for another monologue. I can't say I wasn't disappointed. Last year, I was so impressed to see my co-actresses try to perform in Japanese even though it was not their native language. I wish my English skills were good enough to perform on stage. Maybe there might be opportunities to perform on stage in English some day.
Today, I read the monologue I was assigned in English, before checking its Japanese version. Strangely, the English version is easier to perform, but not the Japanese one. Perhaps that's because the monologues were originally written in English. The Japanese version cannot covey well, because there is always the problems with translation. In English, the word order, the logic flow and the sounds for performers' pronunciation are well organised and beautiful, but in Japanese, you should work for that. You can understand the meaning of the lines in Japanese, but don't know how beautiful and strong they would sound in English.
Reading aloud the monologues was really fun and I thought it was also good for improving my speaking skills. I will be able to enjoy practicing them for the following three months. I am glad I have a stage to perform on for next year.
