Regarded as a rare pitch pattern, the “double circumflex tone” (DCT) turned out to be fairly common after a countrywide survey of Chinese dialects. Introduction
This paper reports two newly confirmed types of contour tone: the ‘double circumflex tone’ (DCT) and the back dipping tone in Chinese dialects. This zigzag contour has a “falling-rising-falling” pitch curve with two turning points in both perceptual and acoustic terms. It was mentioned in Chao (1930), but without examples. Our finding of DCTs in dozens of Chinese dialects has confirmed its contrast against dipping tones. Moreover, a decayed pitch shape from the DCT, the back dipping, has also been identified.
