Today I read an article about food for birds in winter. In central European Russia, many birds can be seen in cities in winter: sparrows, pigeons, crows. Some species get closer to urban areas in winter in search of food: blue tits, bullfinches. The article said that different species of birds need different food. For instance, oats, cereals, and sunflower seeds are good for ducks. Butter and pork fat are good for blue tits. Fresh and dried fruits are the right type of food for bullfinches. Stale bread and cereals will do nicely for pigeons. The article also warned against fresh bread -- it causes digestive problems to most birds. Ducks are the most vulnerable when it comes to bread, so it is best not to give them bread at all.
