”今古有神奉志士”は、”今も古(いにしえ)にも神に奉ずる志士有り”という読み方になります。
今(now, modern)
古(old, past)
有神(there is a god/gods)
奉(follow/respect/serve/a lot of possible meanings)
志士(men with ambition)
To put simply, it means “Now and past there is a god to respect ambitious men."
これを解りやすく言うと「今も昔も、志を持つ士には神が宿る(保護する)」となるそうです。

Now and in old times, God stays in a person who has an ambition.
Katumoto gives Algren a the sword when after 8 minutes pass.
"The" is used because it is the sword you have been referring to this entire journal. I know "when 8 minutes pass" is a translation, but it might sound more natural in English to say "after 8 minutes" when referring to a time stamp on a video.
That's a really funny fact! I imagine there are a lot of bad translations in that movie (though, I sort of liked The Last Samurai, overall).
When I watched "The Last Samurai", I found some strange translarations. Some translations don't get through the original message fully. Altough there are some exaggration, the movie is a good movie.
