toki : The time goes by like an arrow (0)

The time goes by like an arrow.

I have been here for more than 8 months since I came here Sydney. What I thought before coming here was I would have a good command of English in one year. However, it’s turned out that I’m standing far away from what I imagined.

I had been to a language school for first 6 months to blush up my English skills. At the end I reached the highest class in my school, though, I wasn’t satisfied with my level of English. I had no problem spending time in a class. However, when I worked at a local restaurant with native speakers, I felt as if I had been in an elementary class. I needed to ask at least twice what my boss were getting at. Customers were the worst. I wasn’t used to Australian accent so hardly had a conversation with them.

As going through some difficulty, my English, for sure, has been trained and making progress. it’s really rewarding to get a compliment, especially after hard work. It’s one of reasons for me engaging in acquiring English, which people think of unreasonable to do but I don’t mind. However, I often come up against scenes in which I’ll be disappointed at myself. I really don’t like people making a confused face because they don’t take me in. Besides that, what lets me down more is that when people gently tell me things I’ve already known. I know it’s sweet of them, but I sometime feel silly myself. I’m sure it happens to any other learners as well.

There are only 4 months left. I have several goals that I want to achieve within the time. there is no time of wasting. I have to put a lot efforts into my study.

toki : Hard time gave me a chance of reconsideration (0)

As I told you, I’ve been suffering from finding a job here in Sydney since I came here. Due to my visa condition, it’s not easy to do so at all. However, things are looking up. I finally managed to find a job. To be precise, I got two jobs.
After a long string of bad luck, I finally got a lucky break. How this miracle happened? After all, it is a connection that helps you out with finding out a good job.

The other day, I told my teacher how miserable I had been my life in Sydney. He took pity on me, then introduced me his friend who owns a restaurant. I went for a job interview there in no time, though, the prospect wasn’t good, so I changed to a strategy of asking my classmate whether or not, I could take over his post, since he was leaving in a coulpe of weeks for his country.

I couldn’t get any answer from both jobs for a while. However, a few week later, my phone rang all of sudden. The both offered me to pay me twice as much money as I get from my current job. That’s nothing left to desire. I determined to take the two jobs, and I couldn’t be merrier, considering all effort I put into.

This is not the end of a story, I had been pretty excited to go on to work there until my flat mate told me she got much better job than me. I got the sense of jealousy towards her. What comes to mind was a thought that I could have found a better job than her. As the old saying goes, the grass is always greener the other side.

I had evaluated myself only good thing about me was that I was not the kind of person who is easily satisfied with themselves, I even though of complacency as my enemy. But this time, I have to re-evaluate myself. What I learnt from this lesson was that it’s ok to compromise myself sometimes of my life. I can’t expect better all the time. I should count myself lucky to find the job, and more than anything, I don’t want to go through such a hard time again!!

toki : The best way to improve a second language (1)

The best way to improve a second language

What comes to mind when you are asked about the best way of boosting the speed of learning your second language? Each people has each own way to study. However, in my experience, it is to speak it as often as possible that is the most effective learning method.

Well, you might think it is too simple and nothing special. My answer is “Yes, it is, but it works more than you think.” Despite of the fact that many people consider it as the best way of improving their language skills, it is a lot less number of leaners that is not taking it seriously. I think this is because there is many awkward moments when committing themselves to do so.

Over 3 weeks, I didn’t speak Japanese at all, but English. I have started my only-English-rule in order to prepare myself for an speaking exam. Since then, I’ve been speaking English all the time, even when the Japanese talk to me in Japanese, I response to it in English. It made their and me feel uncomfortable, rather they seen me like a strange guy. it was, however, only for the beginning. Once I got used to it, there were no obstacles.

The outcomes came to me all of sudden. My english teacher praised me for a quick progress in my English. It was really rewarding. I regret not having started it much earlier, or should I count myself luck realizing the best method of learning?

toki : A real outcome of language education (0)

Finally, I’ve finished my language course. It was really challenging for me to try CAE (Certificate in Advanced English). I’ve learnt lots of grammer and techniques to obtain a high score in the exam. I admit great progress in my English, which is a good thing, right??

To be honest, I feel guilty sometimes when I’m speaking English as a part of exercise. The reason for this is that I needed to make up a story as so to speak fluent English. In any kind of English test which include a speaking section in it, it is fluency in speaking and the structure that it is put much value on rather than candidat’s opinion. Therefore, it’s not too much to say that I’m used to creating a anecdote with a pack of lies.

Don’t judge me! What should be blamed for generating a feeling of guilt is stupid questions given by an examiner. What am I supposed to answer a question like what I want to be in my future? given that I’ve even not figured out the answer yet. If you are learning any language, I bet you also find it easy to lie to avoid many poes or an inconvenient conversation.

After all, I came to the conclusion that I’ve become to be able to take advantage of making a fack story up. And I hope this skill will bring me benefits.

toki : Murphy's Law (0)

Do you find yourself lucky or unlucky? For me, I’ve never thought of it in my life until last month. It was horrible, that is the only word I can describe it as. I even thought somebody was casting a spell on me. I underwent a really tough time in July, this experience reminded me of “Murphy’s Law”.

“Murphy's Law”, I learned about this in my class. As far as I understand, the definition of Murphy’s Law is something like this; something bad happens to you, even though you think it is unlikely to occur. My July was nothing less than following Murphy’s Law. one day, for instance, my agent called me about my future plan. They told me that a business school which I wanted to go to was going to close their course due to a lack of its participants. It was absolutely out of the blue for me, because I had been planning the course for almost 2 months and I even taken the entrance test for it.

After the unexpected news, my friend advised me to do something fun to steam off my anxiety, so I decided to go to watch a filme. Even worse, in the middle of the movie, an alram started to ring all of sudden, and every audiences forced to move out from the theatre. We were unable to watch the end of story. Needless to say, I was in quite a terrible mood. This is just one of the examples. If I had a command of English, I would write every single event I came across last month.

Compared to July, things are much better in August. However, I’m still in the midst of misfortune. I guess what I can do is to believe that good things come after bad ones.

toki : Friends or Family? (1)

Friends or Family?

As a language leaner, I’m often asked the same question. “Which it is more important for you, your friends or family?” There is no exact answer for this question, which makes me feel uncomfortable to talk. Therefore, I’ve already prepared the answer. “For me, my friends are more important than my parents”.
That’s my idea. But the most important part comes after this: WHY?? As a matter of fact, most of my teacher or classmates usually object to or wonder my idea since they value their parents rather than their friendships. Ok fair enough, I’ll show my point of view in respect to relationships.

First thing spring up me is the fact that you cannot choose your parents. Whereas, you can find someone who has something in common with and build a great relationship. In terms of benefits we can receive, I’m sure nobody think of this topic because it’s a kind of an arrogant idea, there are many things to lear about establishing a good term with your fellows. I also believe those are necessary to survive our stressful society.

In addition to it, in all likelihood, your parents will pass away before you do. If you rely too much on your parents, not only you can’t be independent from your parents but also the loneliness you will feel because of lossing them will devastate you. Apparently what you need is friends who can back you up.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that it’s okay to treat our parents halfheartedly, like which many teenagers do during their adolescent period. More precisely, we ought to care for parents for sure, but they are not nearly as important as friends for those reasons I mentioned above.
The point is that you can’t choose your life but you can choose your companies.

toki : Why we have to apologize? (1)

Why we have to apologize?

One thing I learned in my life, which is just 22 years, is that it is better to apologize in any case. I can exactly imagine how you react, “why would I have to say sorry if I do not anything wrong”. Yes, that’s true. It sounds silly and instinctively human beings do not like to acknowledge their faults. However, I’m going to ask another question. Have you ever lost your friends or partners because of the arguments they and you made? Certainly, I have lots of fellows who I’ve never met since trivial quarrels. Do you still think there are benefits you can get from clamming you are right?

Personally, I’m trying to have logical thinking rather than temporary emotion. Since this, I believe that it is very important to control your anger and anxiety. I discovered that apologizing is the best way to do so.

Let me put it this way, once you feel guilty, where it doesn’t matter why we feel that way, we often tend to search for what is actually causing problems, and eventually end up accusing your behavior that we think as the possible causation, even though they have nothing to do with the trouble. As a result of which, we cannot get out of the vicious cycle. Sadly, this is human nature.

That is my theory. I admit that to express your feeling or opinion are absolutely important. However, sometimes, it doesn’t help to maintain good relationships in terms of long-term benefits.

toki : Technology is good or bad? (0)

There is no argument that the advance of technologies has influenced our society and things we dreamed about before have materialized, but it has synchronously contributed to health-related problems. While some say that innovations should not happen if they harm human health, in all likelihood, innovative science can probably solve those existing problems.

First of all, it is true to claim that high-tech gadgets have triggered a sedentary lifestyle. Nowadays, human activity has change to creative one rather than physical one, thanks to the emergence of a computer. However, they resulted in a dramatic fall in the amount of exercise, which is often considered the main cause od the boost of obese. as a matter of fact, doctor warn their patients to work out instead of sitting in front of a computer due to obesity are closely connected to other diseases such as strokes and diabetes.

on the other hand, it is a fact that life expectancy is increasing more than ever before due to the improvements on medical equipment and medicine. This progress has made ideas which were only existing in the science fiction come true. Amazingly, it is possible to create any types of organs from a single cell. Therefore, it is expected that its technology can be used to replace the organ which malfunction.

Moreover, the bonds between friends can be strengthened by developed communication technology. it is proven that this new way of connecting to others can stimulate our brain and make it younger, it lead to preventing from dementia.

in conclusion, there are some health concerns in terms of innovations, however, all things considered, the benefits we are receiving outweigh the negative aspects.

toki : Better choice for energy source (0)

Nowadays, many kinds of societies are depending on electricity and we can not live without it. However, fossil fuels such as coal, which are used to produce energy, pollute the atmosphere and may deplete soon. Because of this, there are emerging alternative energy sources, and most people consider nuclear as the best option to replace fossil duel combustion. However, I am not certain this decision from the potential health-risks of view.

First of all, we need to accept the advantages f nuclear power, as its efficiency is significantly greater than burning fossil fuels. It is estimated that a nuclear power plant can create sufficient electricity to supply a thousand households completely. Furthermore, in the process of generating the power, it emits 10 times less Carbon dioxide than the former technology does. The new energy is an absolutely efficient and clean energy source.

However, there are a lot of concerns about the risks. it is well-known that a tiny portion of radioactive energy can harm human's health. It a nuclear power plant is destroyed by natural disaster, namely an earthquake and Tunami and the radiation leaks out from the plant, the consequences would be catastrophic. Not only are people exposed to the danger directly, but also there are many possibilities that they may intake contaminated foods by accident, because radiation stays in a creature's body and in the food-chain. Therefore, the level of the toxic element is accumulated a high level, which can be harmful to health.

In addition, there are other energy sources and they are much cleaner and less risky. Taking solar energy as an example, with which it is possible to create electric power, thanks to modern technology. while its efficiency is not as high as nuclear energy's, it causes no toxic gases nor substances. It is a truly green energy.

In conclusion, it is true to say that nuclear energy is necessary to provide citizens with comfortable lives, nevertheless, there are a huge number of problems related with health. Thus it is better to have variety of energy sources and develop their technologies rather than by just nuclear power.

toki : The effects of tourism (0)

Tourism is becoming increasingly important as a source of revenue to many countries but its disadvantages should not br overlooked. Discuss.

These days, plenty of nations have been introducing tourism and earning a huge amount of money as a result. However, it is believed that the outcomes of commercialized tourism may cause other serious issues in the area. I fiercely agree this statement and feel that the shortcoming of tourism industry should not be ignored.

First of all, industrialized tourism may not be sustainable for the local area's economy. It is often said that due to tourism the natural environment in countries has been destroyed. The companies' priority is usually hoe much they can earn from tourism, so they exploit the unspoiled nature and build new facilities. These careless movements lead the endemic plants and animals to being under threat.

In addition to that, indigenous cultures are also threatened by tourism industries. Native cultures and customs are used as products to get tourists' attention in sightseeing spots. Because of this, indigenous people are likely to neglect the historical values of their culture. It results in the native people losing their valuable traditions.

While tourism industry often critiqued from the point of view of waiving the uniqueness out, the incomes from tourism can help preserve local cultures and nature. Some scientists point out that we can use the revenue to pass the priceless culture and environment on to the next generation.

In conclusion, the tourism as an industry has many potential harms and most of them should not be underestimated. However, there are some positive effects to local people. The most important this is that we have to analyze it properly and make the best balance between both advantages and disadvantages.

toki : Private vehicles (0)

The private motor vehicle has greatly improved individual freedom of movement. Moreover, the automobile has become a status symbol. Yet the use of private motor vehicles has contributed to some of today's most serious problems. How can the use of private motor vehicles be reduced?

In today's society, it is common to have individual cars. It is well-known that the emission of CO2 from automobiles is one of the causes of global warming and acid rain. This is a huge concern for our future and we should not carry down the problems to the next generations. To prevent catastrophic outcomes, the government should take the initiative in reducing the umber of private vehicles.

To begin with, there is an enormous increase in the number of automobiles recently, especially private ones. Thanks to technological advances, the life standard has been rising and it been allowed us to afford to purchase an automobile on our own. It also makes our lives a lot easier. We can enjoy leisure driving and curry a great deal of baggage when you go shopping. Furthermore, possessing own car has a potent symbol for the owner's social state. If you have a super fancy sport car, other people consider you as successful and may even respect you. This makes you feel fulfilled. Consequently, this prompt people to buy a car.

On the other hand, a rise in the percentage of car possessions is highly problematic. These shortcomings have been recognized as tremendous influences on the earth. Taking the global warming as an example, carbon dioxide, which is a gas emitted by motor vehicles, is renown as one of factors causing the phenomenon. Due to a significant rise in the amount of gas, many salient researchers are insisting that the standard of temperature is dramatically climbing. As a result, they focust that the sea level will go up and a million of people will suffer from it.

In attempt to stop the tragic future, the government should create new regulations to encourage citizens to use public transport. A social scientist suggests that the government can start with offering to cut back the costs of transportation, since the fare is the reason why people are not willing to take a bus or other form of transportation.

In conclusion, it is obvious that having a private car enriches our lives. However, there are a lot of concerns. I strenuously feel that currying out some new policies by the government can sort out these problems.

toki : Obesity (0)

The percentage of overweight children in western society
has increase by almost 20% in the last ten years. Discuss the possible causes and effects of this disturbing trend and offer a solution.

Despite of awareness of danger of obeseness, the population of overweight kids has been dramatically increasing in the western society. This alarming trend is not only a problem for themselves, but also for society itself. This epidemic is caused by many elements and they are complicated, so that it is not easy to address this issue. However, I fiercely believe that governments should conduct some precautions to ward off the outcomes, which may lead to us a serious disaster in the future.

First of all, there are plenty of reasons why children are more likely to be obesity. One of the causes is related to a decline of the amount of their activities. This is a result of introducing hi-tech gagets. These new types of entertainment attract children’s attentions, because they have beautiful graphic and are bay far exiting than outdoor activities. Addition to this, another factor is their diet habit. People’s lifestyles are significantly changed and everyone is busy at a work, therefore, they have not afforded to make meals. Likewise, children have started to eat fast food more than before. This lets them gain weight consequently.

It is predicted the population of excess-weight children will cause catastrophic problem later. One of its effects is a health problem. There are a enormous number of researches that suggest obesity rises a potential of cancer and diabetes. In ten years, the mortality rate may be higher than the present.
Furthermore, the budet used on health care service will be expanded it the rat of overweigh children continues to grow in this speed. This means that government will not use adequate money on other politics. For those reasons, we have to avert this alarming trend.

To prevent tragic future, governments should be responsible for this. They can create new regulations that make teenagers eat less fast foods. They can change the education system and then, teach students how threatening have unbalanced diet, so that pupils could improve their eating habits.
In conclusion, it is obvious that the high rate of obesity has been reflected modern western society. If we neglect this impact of the phenomenon, we will suffer in the future. it is needed that governments tackle this problem immediately and properly.

toki : Kimono, traditional Japanese (0)

Now, a kimono(着物) is well-known all over the world as one of cool Japanese culture and a number of foreign people expect to see Japanese girls put on a fancy but pretty Kimono. However, in today's society, it has become less common to wear a traditional cloth. It is not good idea to wear a kimono on a daily life, because the way of wearing is too complicated for normal people and also it is expensive. Many oversea tourist might be disappointed at this fact. However, there is silver lining in a cloud. People wear a kimono on special occasions. For example, on coming of age, a commencement and so on. If you are lucky you might see people in a Kimono on a street in Japan, but never with a chonmage (topknot).

toki : The number of suicide increase by 2.5 times more in 4 years (1)

There is a rapid increase in the number of younger people(10 to 20 years old) committing suicide because of unsuccessful job-hunting recently.

According to National Police Agency, which does a research about the reasons of self-murder, 150 college students and so on committed suicide, due to suffer from seeking a job. The number grows 2.5 times greater than in 2007.

National Police Agency analysed the main causes of suicide looking into fare notes and notes which are written in life thoroughly. The cases of suicide resulting from a failure in job-seeking launched to 91 people in 2008, even though the number was only 60 people in 2007. Every year, men account for about 80 or 90%, and the number of students who committed suicide particularly was 52 people, which is 3.2 times more than in 2007.

This trend is because of deteriorating employment conditions. According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the percentage of landing a job had decrease to 96.9% on 4th of August. After Lehman’s fall in September in that year, the number had dropped to 95.1% in following year. It was the lowest rate in April last year, 91.0%, influenced by the grate Tohoku disaster.

reference
http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20120508-00000690-yom-soci

toki : The better environment for students (1)

Students learn better in small classes. Schools should ensure that classes remain small for most effective learning. To what extent do you agree?

It is often said that one of the important factors in learning process is the number of students in a class. Because of this, some people believe educational institutions have to keep the number of students low. I also believe that this statement is certainly true.

The first reason that I think schools should control the number of participants is related to interactions. It is widely accepted that the efficient way to learn subjects is to interact between students and teachers, because interactions is one of the elements to intrigue people’s attentions. There is no doubt that the less there are people in classes, the more teachers and students have opportunities for interactions. In this way, the people in small classes can ask more questions than in large classes.

In addition, it is lots of easier for educators to monitor their students‘ skills if there are a few people in classes. Educators have to pay close attentions to students’ progress so that they can provide appropriate some advice about how to achieve student’s goals. Taking tutoring system as an example, if one teacher is tutoring many students, it would be difficult for him/her to organize the information about his/her students. This idea definitely suggests the statement.

Finally, we also have to admit negative points of a less-student strategy. Since there are a few people, the cost for lessons is more expensive. However, considering the delicate service we can receive, this is still beneficial to us.

In conclusion, while there are many arguments in regard to the number of students in classes, I strongly believe that schools try to minimalise the number of learners as few as they can.

toki : The influence of mass media (0)

The mass media, including television, radio and newspapers, have great influence in shaping people's ideas.
To what extent do you agree with this statement?

In todays society, the mass media has been playing a great role in regard to forming people’s ideas. Even though some believe that there are negative aspects to them, I strongly feel that we are definitely relaying on information from the mass media and they are to tally beneficial to us in many ways.

The first reason I think we are affected greatly by the multimedia is because the mass media is a good source of information. Taking an election as a example, a major way to know government campaigns is though television for most of people. There are many news programs which explain the details of manifesto with very understandable words during the campaigns., so that we can decide which party we are going to vote.

Secondly, the mass media affects our ideas of purchasing as well. These days, wherever we go it is impossible to escape advertising. We see it on streets, on public transport, on television and on the internet. While it is controversial, there is no doubt that we are making decisions based on commercial messages. For example, when we wonder about which two products we are going to buy, we are likely to recall the special offer or imagines about those two products. Then, we will buy one of them, which you like or have better imagines about.

Finally, I accept the point of view that the mass media has sometimes affected our ways of thinking in a baf way. The best example of this is also advertising, especially about smoking and alcohol. Companies often over-exaggerate their products to convince people to puy their products and mainly teenagers are targeted. This leads yo the result that teenagers tend to consider cigarettes and drinking as cool, and it results in a increase in number of alcohol related problems or unhealthy habits.

In conclusion, there are many examples of influences on our thought by the mss media. Some of them are negative and others have positive aspects. I think, either way, it is almost impossible to avoid the influence of the mass media.

toki : Books vs Multimedia (0)

some people said the age of books is past. The information will be presented by video, computers, televisions, filmes. Others think the books and the written words will be necessary for spread information and complete education.

Over the course of years, the modern technology has made a tremendous influence on our lives. One of the advances of technology is providing information via the multimedia. I strongly feel that the new way of suppling information is beneficial for most of people in the world.

To begin with, one of the most significant features of multimedia is their speed. We able to access a variety of information immediately, which would have not happen if we had kept to use only books to convey information. In my case, for example, I often check up words that I do not know in Internet when I run across them, so I do not have to go library for it. This can save me time. It is very convenient particularly for student or business person.

In addition, another reason to support this statement is their grate range of information. It covers lot of fields, so that we can be familier with different categories, which we might not know without mass media. News programes are great example of this. News provide lots of information that might be beneficial for us and cover from business to science areas. In a super competitive society today, it is essencial to know a wide variety of knowledge.

Meanwhile, there is some negative aspects of media. Accuracy of information is the example of these. Even though it is quite easy to look up information, there is a potential that that information might be inaccurate. The reason for this is that anybody, even who are not proficient in the field, can write information on the Web. In this point, books are proven or consider the contents carefully before published.

In conclusion, while there are some negative aspects of the improvement of media, I firmly believe that the bright side of multimedia is necessary for us in a society today. But also, we have to monitor carefully the negative points of developments of information technology.

toki : The influence of the mass media (2)

The mass media, including television, radio and newspapers, have great influence in shaping people’s ideas. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement.

In society today, we see advertisements everywhere. It is often said that the mass media has a huge impact on our daily lives in many ways. I strongly feel that the mass media, such as TV, radio and newspapers, affect on people negatively.

On one hand, there is no doubt that the advertising is effective and clever way to attract potential customers. A great example of this is ads on Youtube. Nowadays, many people watch animations on Youtube. During watching, some advertisements which is related to the animation are popping up on the screen, so that people are likely to click the ads many often. This results in an increase in sales of productions. This is obviously a bright side of the mass media.

On the other hand, sometimes, the mass media might be a reason for crimes. Some products are advertised with fake information so as to attractive more people. For instance, some of products are claiming that they have a great effect to lose weight without no evidence, or sometimes they create even fack results for it. However, customers have no way to prove it, except buying the items and using it. This is a big issue regarding forming people’s ideas.

In addition, advertising often affects on children negatively. The reasons for this is that kids are so innocent that they believe the mass media without a doubt. There are many adverts which is aimed at children. When kids watch that kind of adverts, they feel desired to buy and ask their parents persistently. This puts a lot of pressure on their parents, especially parents on low incomes.

In summary, even though mass media has both side of effects on our lives positively and negatively, I believe that the disadvantages of it are by far grater than its positive aspects.
