There is a custom in the Children's Day to eat Kashiwamochi, a rice cake containing bean past wrapped in a Kashiwa or oak leaf. And Chimaki, rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves. Kashiwa leaves don't shed its dead leaves until the young leaves come out in the spring even if it is a deciduous tree. From this, the Kashiwa leaf is linked to descendant prosperity.
子供の日には柏餅やちまきを食べる習慣があります。柏の樹はは落葉樹なのに、葉が枯れても落葉せず、春になって新芽が出始める頃に葉を落とします。この事から柏は子孫繁栄になぞらえられています。
