Past Form of the Adjective

そのパーティーはとても楽しかった。 The party was very enjoyable.

楽しかった is the plain past form of the adjective 楽しい. It is easy to use when we speak casually, but it becomes troublesome when we have to speak in a formal manner using the auxiliary verb です. You must use です in present tense.

そのパーティーはとても楽しかったでした。 (incorrect)
そのパーティーはとても楽しいでした。 (incorrect)
そのパーティーはとても楽しかったです。 (correct)

きのうはお休みでした。私は妻と映画を見に行きました。とても楽しかったです。 I was off work yesterday and went to the movies with my wife. It was a lot of fun.

I don't like the last sentence. It sounds a little bit childish, but I cannot propose any alternatives using an adjective. I think this is one of the weak points of adjectives when used in polite Japanese conversation. The following sentence written in the casual form is not bad at all.
