I'm going to run the Honolulu Marathon in Dec.11th. This is my 6th race.
I've been training for about 3 months, but I haven't done enough exercise to run within 4 hours.(Yes, this is the time I wanna run.)
At first, I thought to change my objective, but I decided no to do so.
To cheer up myself, I made a challenge on JustGiving charity website.
One of my friends' baby is suffering from muscle dystrophy. So, I chose to support the research of this disease.

In this games, I saw a lot of regretful tears of the athletes who had been expected to win medals. I feel sorry for them when I imagine how they felt after the competitions.

At the same time, however, I think it might be good for them in a way that they had to come to terms with such painful results. Gold medals could give them reward for their efforts they ever made. However, the facts that they lost victories or medals by a hair or something unlucky must give them powerful driving forces to improve themselves more and help them build their inner strength required as world-class athletes. I believe that if they don't forget their feeling at the moment they lost medals they will be much stronger than now.
Motivation of growing raised by their chagrin might be much stronger than the one the gold medalists have to maintain after their achievement.

Fortunately, many of the athletes are young enough to aim for the next Olympics. I hope that we will see their joyful tears in their new big challenge someday.

数多くの感動的なシーンを私たちの記憶の中に残し、バンクーバーオリンピックが閉幕しました。
多くの日本人選手が素晴らしいパフォーマンスを見せてくれました。
今大会では、メダル獲得を期待された選手の悔し涙をたくさん見ました。
競技の後の彼らの気持ちを考えるととてもかわいそうに思います。
しかし同時に、彼らがそのようなつらい結果を受け入れなければならないことは、ある意味彼らにとって良いことかもしれないとも思います。
金メダルは、それまでの彼らの努力が報われるものかもしれません。しかし、彼らがほんの紙一重あるいは不運で勝利やメダルを逃したということは、彼らが更に強くなるための強力な原動力となり、ワールドクラスのアスリートとして求められる精神的な強さを身につける助けとなるに違いありません。
メダルを逃した瞬間の感情を忘れなけば、今よりもずっと強くなれるでしょう。悔しさから湧き上がる成長のモチベーションは、金メダリストが達成してしまった後に持ち続けなければならないモチベーションよりもずっと強いものかもしれません。
幸い、選手たちの多くは十分若く、次のオリンピックを目指すことができます。
いつの日か、次の大きな挑戦の場で彼らの歓喜の涙が見られることを願っています。

In Japanese, there is a phrase, "起死回生", which expresses that you were almost dying but you did something and that saved your life. For example, "松井が起死回生の逆転満塁サヨナラホームランでジャイアンツを救った。Matsui pulled the Giants back from the brink with a grand slam that gave them a come-from-behind victory."

Her shot was exactly "起死回生のショット".


オリンピックの女子カーリングで日本がイギリスを11-4で破りました。前回のエントリで書きましたが、非常にタフなゲームでした。ゲーム終了のラスト数エンドでは、日本はイギリスを6-4でリードし、イギリスをなんとか突き放そうとしていました。しかし、イギリスはなんども素晴らしいショットを決め、日本に得点を許しませんでした。試合の流れはイギリスにあると思いました。第9エンドでも両者は激しく争い、イギリスが2点を獲得して同点に追いつくチャンスでした。もしイギリスがタイに持ち込んだら、第10エンドでは逆転して勝ってしまうのではと思いました。しかし、日本のスキップが最後の最後で奇跡的なショットを決めました。彼女が投じたストーンは目標の手前にあったストーンをかすめて通り過ぎました。1cmもないくらいののわずかな差でした。試合後彼女は、「イギリスに1点は与えてもいいので2点をあげるのは防ぎたかった。2つのストーンを出して5点取れたのはラッキーでした。」と話していました。

日本語に、「起死回生」という言葉があります。ほとんど死にかけていたところで命を救う何かをした、ということを表します。彼女のはまさに「起死回生のショット」でした。

In most of the game, the two teams went back and forth at each other, but Japan's skip made a super shot at the last throw in ninth end and Japan got 5 points at a time. The players of both teams performed very well. They made a lot of great throws in the game.

Above all, some throws by 19 year-old England's skip, Eve Muirhead, were excellent. Skip throws the last two throws in each end. She made perfect shots under intense pressure at some important situations that might decide the result of the game. Japan's skip, Moe Meguro, also performed very well. The battle by the two skips were really worth seeing.

After the match, the Japan's results in the preliminary became 2 wins and 2 loses. Ten team compete in the round-robbin in the preliminary and the top four teams advance to the final tournament. Canada, Sweden and China are said to be the favorites to get the medals, but getting through the preliminary is very competitive. Actually, England beat China, the world champion in 2009, at their first match.

Japan is fifth place at this moment. According to the newspaper, the team aimed this results in the first four matches in the preliminary because if they made it, they'll have a confidence to get a medal.

The next match will be held on Monday. I'm looking forward to seeing it.


オリンピックのカーリング女子日本対イギリス戦を見ました。日本がイギリスを11-5で破りました。スコア上は楽勝に見えますが、実際は非常に接戦でした。

試合のほとんどで、両者は一進一退でしたが、第9エンドで日本のスキップがスーパーショットを決め、一度に5点を取りました。両チームのプレーヤーとも素晴らしく、多くの優れたスローを見せてくれました。

中でも、イギリスの19歳のスキップの Eve Muirhead 選手のスローは素晴らしいものでした。スキップは、各エンドの最後の2投を投げます。試合を左右する重要な局面で、彼女はプレッシャーの中完璧なショットを重ねました。日本のスキップの目黒萌絵選手も素晴らしく、両スキップの競り合いは見応えがありました。

この試合で、日本の予選での結果は2勝2敗となりました。予選では10チームが総当たり戦を行い、上位4チームが決勝トーナメントに進みます。カナダ、スウェーデン、中国がメダル候補といわれていますが、予選の勝ち抜くのは非常に激しい争いです。実際、イギリスが2009年の世界チャンピオンの中国を最初の試合で破っています。

現在日本は第5位。新聞によると、選手達は、予選最初の4試合でこの結果を出すことを目指していました。それができれば、メダル獲得への自信となります。

次の試合は月曜日。楽しみです。

In curling, two team of four players take turns to throw a stone so that it's placed as close as the center of the circle called the house. A game consists of 10 ends. An end consists of each player from both teams throwing two stones.

Yesterday, the Japan team lost the game against the Canada team by 7-6. They played very well, but made a few mistakes at critical times.

Now the game has proceeded to the 6th end and the China team leads 4-2. Though the Japan team lost to the Canada yesterday, they kept concentrating on the game very well. However, in this game, it seems that they're not in good condition at this moment.

I hope they'll perform better in the second half of the game.

今、日本のカーリングチームが中国チームと対戦しています。中国チームは2009年の世界選手権を制し、世界ランクはカナダについ第2位です。

カーリングは、4人ずつの2つのチームが順番にストーンを投げ、ハウスと呼ばれる円の中心にできるだけ近くなるように置いていきます。1ゲームは10エンドで、1エンドでは、各プレーヤーが2つのストーンを投げます。

昨日、日本チームはカナダチームに7-6で敗れました。善戦しましたが、肝心なところでいくつかミスをしてしまいました。

今、試合は6エンドまで進み、中国チームが4-2でリードしています。昨日日本はカナダに敗れましたが、試合中とても集中していました。しかし、この試合では、現時点ではあまり調子はよくないようです。

後半は調子が上がることを期待しています。

The announcer and the TV commentator are explaining the rules and basic tactics clearly for beginners, so I can understand what the players are trying to do in each throw.

Curling is like billiard on ice, isn't it? Players are required to plan where to arrange each stone cleverly. In some case, they try to place a stone as close as the center of the circle, and in another case, they try to bump the opponent's stone out of the circle. They sometimes place a stone to guard another stone that is close to the center. Good players can throw a stone not only precisely straight but also throw it in a curve line. In addition, they have to figure out the condition of the ice floor to control each throw. The condition changes with time. Very precise throwing skills and judgements are needed to win.

Canada team is said to be the favorite of the gold medal, but the game is very close. Japan team is doing very well. I hope they'll score an upset!


今、テレビでオリンピックを見ています。日本のカーリングチームがカナダチームと戦っています。カーリングは詳しくありませんが、試合はとても面白いです。アナウンサーと解説者が素人にも分かりやすくルールや戦術の説明をしてくれているので、選手達が各スローでどうしようとしているのかが分かります。

カーリングは氷上のビリヤードのようですね。選手はそれぞれのストーンを巧妙に配置するようプランニングすることが要求されます。ある時はストーンをサークルの中心にできるだけ近く置こうとし、またある時は、相手のストーンをサークルからはじき出そうとします。時には中心に近いストーンをガードするように配置することもあります。優秀な選手は正確にまっすぐ投げられるだけでなく、カーブを描いて投げることもできます。さらに、選手は各スローをコントロールするために、氷の状態を把握する必要があります。コンディションは時間の経過とともに変化します。勝つためには、非常に正確なスロー技術と判断が必要となります。

カナダチームは金メダルの最有力候補ですが、試合は接戦です。日本チームは非常に健闘しています。番狂わせを期待しています！

Please imagine that there are five different nigiri-sushi in front of you:
- white-fleshed fish (ex. "ヒラメ"/flounder)
- sea urchin Gunkanmaki ("ウニの軍艦巻")
- soused mackerel ("しめ鯖")
- medium fatty tuna ("中トロ")
- sweet egg ("玉子")

Then, please place these in order you'd like to eat.


According to taste research, it would be good to start with white-flesh fish because it tastes relatively bland and the taste doesn't remain on your tongue too much. You could feel the taste of the next sushi clearly.

Medium fatty tuna, "中トロ" would be good for the second choice because it taste much fattier than white-fleshed fish. You can enjoy the contrast of taste between the two.

After tasting the fatty taste, vinegar in soused mackerel works well to neutralize the fat. You can reset the taste sense of your tongue.

The rest two are sea urchin and sweet egg. What would you eat next?

Many of you might place sweet egg at the end because it tastes sweet like dessert. I always do so, too. If you eat sweet egg first, the sour taste of soused mackerel would pick out the sweet taste of egg well. The taste of sea urchin is somewhat similar to the taste of egg, so if you eat sea urchin after sweet egg, you wouldn't feel sense of discomfort.

Of course, there is no strict rule for order of eating sushi. You can just order what you want at that moment. Also, you wouldn't be satisfied with only those five pieces of sushi. I just wanted to suggest that if you remember these ways to control your taste sense, you could enjoy contrast of taste in sushi better.

目の前に５種類のにぎり寿司があると思ってください。

多くの方は、デザート感覚で甘い玉子を最後にするかもしれませんね。私もいつもそうします。玉子を先に食べると、しめ鯖の酸っぱさが玉子の甘さをよく引き出してくれるそうです。ウニの味はある程度玉子に近いので、玉子の後にウニを食べてもそれほど違和感は感じられないでしょう。

もちろん、寿司を食べるのに厳格なルールなんてありません。その時々で食べたいものを注文すればいいですし、これら５つだけじゃ満足しませんよね。
ただ、これらの味覚をコントロールする方法を覚えておけば、寿司の味のコントラストをより楽しめるのではないかと思い、ご紹介してみました。

According to a survey conducted by the Japan National Tourism Organization in 2009, the largest group answered that they want to try Japanese foods. "to see Japanese traditional architectural style" and "to visit traditional Japanese gardens" were the second and third largest answers.

Other answers were "to stay in Ryokan", "to enjoy Onsen", "to enjoy shopping" and "to see pop cultures" in order of the number of answers.

433 tourists visiting Japan answered the questionnaire and about 90 % of them were from Europe, the U.S. and Australia. I think that if the questionnaire is asked to Asian tourists, shopping would be one of the main purpose.

They were also asked "What would like to buy in Japan?". The top group was "Japanese tea". The second was "digital cameras", the third was "Kimono or Yukata", the fourth was "Japanese confection" and the fifth was "clothing".

Enjoying Japanese foods including tea and confection seem to be a very attractive experience for foreigners.

According to another survey (conducted by Expedia, an online travel agency, asking about 4,000 hotel managers), Japanese tourists received high evaluations about "to follow local manners, "to make yourself polite" and "not to be noisy in the hotel". However, the low evaluations they got were "to try to speak in the local language" and "to try local foods". In comparison, the evaluations about visitors from the U.S. contrasted with those about Japanese.

I like trying various local foods very much when I go abroad, some of them aren't good for my taste, though. I think that it's a shame to sidestep opportunity to enjoy local foods and communication.

別の調査（オンライン旅行会社のExpediaが約4,000人のホテルのマネージャーに対して実施）によると、日本人観光客は、「現地のエチケットなどにしたがう」、「礼儀正しくふるまう」、「ホテルで騒がない」という点で高い評価を得たそうです。しかし、低い評価を受けたのが、「現地の言葉で話そうと試みる」と「現地の料理を試してみる」ということ。

私自身は、海外で現地の料理を食べるのが大好きです。中には好みに合わないものもありますが。現地の料理やコミュニケーションを楽しむ機会を避けるなんてもったいないと思います。

At this time, the 3D modeling doesn't seem to be done precisely and not to cover all of the places in the world. However, maybe it would be a matter of time. In several years, computers would be able to calculate 3D rendering of the place you want to see in real-time. By the end of this decade, you might enjoy a virtual round-the-world tour in an hour at an amusement park.

Several hours left before starting the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. The news says that it has been warmer than usual in Vancouver. The high temperature today there was eight degrees C, which was higher than Tokyo. (It was six degrees C here.) I hope that the snow condition of the competition venues outside such as for skiing will be better than at this time so that every athletes can show their best performances satisfactorily.

Several weeks ago, I saw the movie "Avatar" and amazed its graphics. I felt the depth created by 3D technology on the flat screen. The scenes such as in the base of troops looked like very real. However, I still felt a certain feeling of strangeness in the scene of the forest, a feeling that I was looking at artificial images in some way. The movie made me recognize anew the greatness of nature. I haven't seen the actual sceneries of the above with my own eyes, but they must be beyond the any scenes I saw through 3D glasses.



冬季オリンピックの開会式まであと数時間余りですね。ニュースによるとバンクーバーはいつもより暖かく、今日の最高気温は８度で東京よりも高いです。（東京は６度でした。）スキーなど外にある競技会場の雪の状態が今よりも良くなって、全ての選手達が満足のいくパフォーマンスを見せられるといいですね。

雪といえば、すばらしい冬景色の写真を見つけたので、いくつか添付します。

数週間前、映画「アバター」を見て、そのグラフィックに驚きました。3D技術で作られた奥行きを平らなスクリーン上に感じました。基地の中といったシーンはとてもリアルでした。しかし森のシーンでは、いまだ何か違和感というか、どこか人工的な映像を見ているように感じました。この映画で自然の偉大さを再認識したような気がします。上で紹介した景色を実際に見たことはありませんが、3Dメガネ越しに見たどんな景色も超越しているじゃないかと思います。

Which PC do you use, Windows or Mac?

I've used Windows PCs for many years. There were three PCs at home. Two of them were so old that I didn't use them anymore.

These days, many major electronic appliance stores buy used electronic appliances from consumers. Last night, I checked their acceptance list of buying on their website whether my used PCs were too old to be bought, and I found that they might be sold at higher prices I thought. In addition, I also had an old projector for home use and the first generation of the iPod touch that I seldom used anymore. According to the list, they also seemed to be sold at a good price.

Today, I went to an electronic appliance store with those four appliances and asked for a clerk to appraise them. It was holiday today, so there were several people who were asking for appraisal and I had to wait for two hours. (I wonder if it was due to the recent recession..?) After two hours, I went back to the appraisal desk. The clerk said that the total price of my used appliances was about thirty thousands yen. I was glad to hear that because I had thought the price would be twenty thousands yen or so. I signed the document and received the money.

Then, I went to the MacBook corner. In Japan, most of major electronic appliance stores have a "point system" for their customers. The stores give back 10 to 15 % in the price as points to the customers who buy their merchandise. The points are recorded in the customers' membership cards. The customers can use the points instead of the money when they buy something next time at the store. It's a kind of customer retention campaign.

I saw that the point percentage for the MacBook was only 5 %. Last night, I had seen a price comparison website and had found a comment which said a person who bought a MacBook at one of the same store chain got 15 % of the price as the points. So, I told a clerk about it and ask him whether I could receive the same rate. He had a talk with his manager for a while and then accepted my offer.(I was lucky!)

I'm glad that I made a great buy. :-)

私は何年もWindowsを使っていて、自宅には3台のPCがありました。うち2台は古くなっていたのでもう使っていませんでした。

この頃は、多くの大手家電量販店が消費者から中古の家電を買っています。自分の中古PCが古すぎて買ってもらえないということはないか、ウェブサイトにある対象リストを見てみたところ、思いのほか高い値段で買い取ってもらえるかもしれない、ということが分かりました。更に、もうほとんど使っていない古い家庭用プロジェクターと第一世代の iPod Touch も持っており、リストによると、それらも良い値段で売れそうでした。

そこで、それら4点の機器を家電量販店に持っていって、店員に査定をお願いしました。今日は祝日だったため、査定を依頼している人達が何人かいて、2時間ほど待たなければいけませんでした。（昨今の不景気のあおりでしょうか。）

2時間後、査定コーナーに戻ったところ、店員から全部でおよそ3万円となる、と言われました。せいぜい2万円くらいだろうと思っていたので嬉しかったです。書類にサインし金額を受け取りました。

そして、MacBook売り場へ。日本では、ほとんどの大手家電量販店には顧客向けの「ポイントシステム」があります。店は、商品を購入した顧客に価格の10から15％をポイントとして還元します。ポイントは顧客のメンバーズカードに記録され、その店で次に何か買う際に現金の代わりに使うことができます。一種の顧客囲い込み策ですね。

MacBook のポイント率はたったの5％とありました。昨夜ある価格比較サイトを見ていたところ、同じチェーンのある店でMacBookを買った人がポイント15％をもらったというコメントを見つけていたので、店員に説明して同じ率にならないかと聞いてみました。彼はしばらく上司と相談していましたが、15％で受けてくれました。（ラッキー！）

良い買い物が出来てよかったです。

In Japan, from late February to March, it is said that it would be warmer and warmer each time it rains. However, it seems to continue cold and cloudy days for a while.

Next week, one of my friends on lang-8 is going to visit Tokyo. I hope it'll be clear and warm during her stay in Japan.


２、３日前、東京はとても暖かかく、最高気温が20度くらいになりました。しかし、次の日には10度以下に急激に下がり、天気予報によると、今日は日中５、６度にしかならないそうです。おまけに午後からは雨で、夜には雪になるかもしれない、とのこと。

日本では、2月下旬から3月にかけては「一雨ごとに暖かくなる」と言われますが、しばらくは寒く曇りがちの日が続きそうです。

来週、lang-8のフレンドの一人が日本に来ます。彼女がいる間は晴れて暖かくなることを祈っています。

You may hear about the "heat-island phenomenon" in large cities. It is said that afforestation is one of the ways to prevent the temperature in the cities rise.

Here is an example of a unique afforestation project. Please look at the attached photo. This is a streetcar/trolley running through Kagoshima-city south in Japan. Kagoshima-city has an active volcano, Sakurajima. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sakurajima

In Kagoshima-city, there are many areas where volcanic ashes, called "shirasu(シラス)", have been accumulated since ancient times. Those ashes had been considered to be of no use until a local small company found a way to produce building blocks from them.

The building block mixed with cement and shirasu can keep water in it because it has a lot of tiny holes. The structure also allows lawn to take roots on the block. The company succeeded to develop the lawn basement that has enough stiffness for the railway area.

There still seems to be some issues to be solved such as maintenance cost, but I hope such a beautiful railways would broaden in many areas.

大都市における「ヒートアイランド現象」というものをご存知だと思います。都市の気温上昇を防ぐには、緑化が一つの方法だと言われています。

ここにユニークな緑化プロジェクトの例があります。添付の写真をご覧ください。これは鹿児島市内を走る路面電車です。鹿児島市には桜島という活火山があります。

鹿児島市には、「シラス」と呼ばれる火山灰が昔から堆積している地域が多くあります。このシラスは、とある小さな地元企業がブロックを作り出す方法を見つけるまでは使い道のないものとして考えられていました。

セメントとシラスを混合したブロックは、小さな穴があるため保水性があり、またその構造により芝生が根を張ることが可能です。その企業は、線路区域として十分な硬さを備えた芝生の基盤の開発に成功しました。

まだ維持費用などの解決すべき課題はあるようですが、このような美しい線路が多くの地域に広がることを願っています。

今日、海外から小包が届きました。以前頼んでいた2009年ホノルルマラソンのDVDです。トップ選手の走りのハイライトシーンと、自分が走っているシーンがいくつか録画されています。マラソンはかなり大変でしたが、ゴールした瞬間はとても嬉しかったです。3時間20分で走ったのですが、自己ベストでした。

Today, I'd like to share with you other nice tea bags.

The first one looks like a origami bird designed by Nathalia Ponomareva from Russia.

I think fish could be designed in the same way, such as angelfish or sea horse.

The second one is humorous. A man is being hanged from the rim of a tea cup. It looks like doing bungee jumping or rock-climbing.

The third one is also humorous design. They look like soaking(?) in the sea. I would design a man soaked in a Japanese onsen putting towel on his head.

It was very windy and cold in Tokyo. The best way for such a wintry day is to relax at warm home with a cup of hot tea, isn't it?


数日前、吊るしたTシャツと潜水艦という2つの素敵なデザインのティーバッグについて書きました。
今日も、別の素敵なティーバッグをいくつかご紹介します。

一番目は、ロシアの Nathalia Ponomareva 氏がデザインした、折り紙の鳥のようなものです。
魚とかも同じように出来るんじゃないでしょうか。エンゼルフィッシュとかタツノオトシゴとか。

2番目はユーモラスです。男がティーカップの縁からぶら下がっています。バンジージャンプやロッククライミングをしているみたいです。

3番目も面白いデザインです。海に浸かって(?)いるようです。私なら、頭の上にタオルをのせて日本の温泉に入っている人をデザインしますね。

今日の東京は、とても風が強く寒い日でした。こんな冬の日は、一杯の温かい紅茶とともに暖かい我が家でリラックスするのが一番ですね。

Another entry about confection. :D

At the station near my house, a Japanese confection stall comes at once a month and sells delicious 饅頭(まんじゅう, steamed bean-jam bun) and 大福(だいふく, rice cake stuffed with bean jam). I often buy a dozen of bite-sized 大福. It's really soft and tastes wonderful.

Today, I found their stall and dropped by there on my way home. I saw an unfamiliar rice cake on the table called "プリン大福". Usual 大福 is white, but that new item was yellow. "プリン" is custard pudding and I love プリン, so I tried one. At first, I thought custard was kneaded into the rice cake, but it was stuffed into the rice cake. It tasted totally different from usual 大福 but so delicious! I should have bought more!!


お菓子のエントリをもう一つ。
家の近所の駅に、月に一度和菓子の売店が来て、美味しい饅頭や大福を売っています。私はよく一口大福を買います。とてもやわらかくて美味しいです。

今日、帰る途中で彼らの店を見つけたので立ち寄ると、「プリン大福」という見慣れない餅がテーブルに載っていました。普通の大福は白いですが、その新商品は黄色でした。プリンが大好きなので、ためしに買ってみました。はじめは、カスタードは餅に練りこんであるのだろうと思っていたのですが、餅の中に詰まっていました。普通の大福とは全く違う味でしたが、非常に美味でした。もっと買えばよかったです！

It's 立春(りっしゅん), the first day of spring today in Japan. However, the lowest temperature this morning in Tokyo was below zero. Wintry days seem to continue for a while.

Although in such a cold day, I bought two kinds of ice cream that I have never seen before at a supermarket. (I often have ice cream in winter as well as summer. :-) ) They are new seasonal products of a major confectionery company and both of them have strawberry flavor.

I tried the rice cake-typed "雪見だいふく(yukimi daifuku)", which is very popular brand of mochi ice cream that has various flavored products. (Q. Should I say "which was" and "that had" to conform to "I tried(past tense)"?) Strawberry-flavored ice cream was covered with thin rice cake and strawberry sauce contained in the center of the ice cream.

The other one I bought was a kind of the "爽(sou)" series. (The Kanji, "爽" has an image of "brisk".) The "爽" seems kinda common ice cream but contains very tiny grains of ice that provides unique in texture. That newcomer is a combination of vanilla flavor and strawberry flavor. In addition, it contains some tiny sweet-and-sour strawberry pulp.

The "雪見だいふく" tasted pretty good. I haven't tried the "爽" yet, but it must be delicious, too. :-)


今日は日本では「立春」です。しかし、今朝の東京の最低気温は氷点下。まだしばらく冬らしい日が続きそうです。

そんな寒い日でしたが、スーパーで、見たことのなかったアイスを2種類買いました。（冬でも夏と同じくらいよくアイスを食べます。）

もちタイプの「雪見だいふく」を食べてみました。雪見だいふくはとても人気があるもちアイスで、いろいろな味があります。ストロベリー風味のアイスが薄いもちに包まれていて、中心にはストロベリーソースが入っていました。

もう一つは「爽」シリーズです。「爽」は一見普通のアイスクリームのようですが、中にとても小さな氷の粒が入っていて独特の食感があります。新作はバニラ味とストロベリー味の組み合わせで、小さな甘酸っぱい苺の果肉も入っています。

雪見だいふくはとてもおいしかったです。「爽」はまだ食べていませんが、これもきっとおいしいでしょう。

It snowed in Tokyo last night. It was the first time in two years that snow accumulated here. In the morning, it already stopped snowing. However, the sidewalks to the station near my house were covered with snow and people were carefully walking on the snow.

Have you heard of this Japanese word, "おっかなびっくり"? I think it means "gingerly" or "timidly".
For example:
- 駅に向かう人達は雪に覆われた道路をおっかなびっくり歩いていた。The people heading to the station were gingerly walking on the road covered with snow.
- 彼らはライオンの檻におっかなびっくり入っていった。They timidly entered the cage of the lion.

"おっかなびっくり" is a composite word of "おっかな(い)" and "びっくり(する)". "おっかない" means "scary" or "dangerous", and "びっくり(する)" means "to be surprised" or "to be frightened" I wonder if the image of the word "おっかなびっくり" would get through to you..?

I wrote this because the scene I saw in the morning reminded me the word. An Westerner put forward it as his favorite Japanese word in his blog. He said that he didn't know its meaning but felt the sound so funny. :-)

It was raining in the afternoon, but it turned to snow in the evening. Maybe it will pile up about two or three inches tomorrow morning. The town covered with snow looks beautiful, but there might be some traffic troubles, train delays and traffic jam. Tokyo is vulnerable to snow because it snows only a few times a year.

今東京は雪です。昼間は雨だったのですが、夜になって雪に変わりました。明日の朝には２，３インチ積もっているでしょう。雪化粧の町は綺麗ですが、電車が遅れたり渋滞が起きるなど交通に支障がありそうです。雪が降るのは年に数回なので、東京は雪には弱いです。

Since the middle of January, they have served a series of new menus called "Big America" for a limited time only. There are four special burgers in the series. Each has a different name of states in the U.S.

The first one is "テキサスバーガー(Texas burger)". I tried one today because it was the last day for that menu. The beef patty is 2.5 times bigger than other burgers' patty. On the bread bun in the middle, there are some fried onions and bacon. In addition, two special sauces are put on the patty, onions and bacon. One is spicy BBQ sauce, and in the other whole-grain mustard and relish are added.

I liked those sauces very much. It tasted really different from the other burgers I usually have.

At first, they didn't sell the Texas burger in a limited quantity. However, it was sold well beyond expectation, in spite of its high price. So, they had to limit the number of the day.

The second one is "ニューヨーク(New York)", the third one is "ハワイ(Hawaii)", and the last one is "カリフォルニア(California)".

Maybe I'll try all of them. I'm a good customer for Mac. :-)


マクドナルドには国ごとにいろいろユニークなメニューがある、というのはご存知でしょう。
これが日本でのメニューです。何か見慣れないものはありますか？
（一つ変なことに気づきました。なんで「サンドウィッチ」なんでしょう？　ここにあるのは全部「ハンバーガー」ですよね？）

1月中旬から、「Big America」という新しい期間限定メニューが出ています。４つのスペシャルバーガーがあり、それぞれアメリカの州の名前がついています。

第一弾は「テキサスバーガー」。今日がラストだったので食べてきました。パティは通常の2.5倍で、真ん中のバンズの上にはフライドオニオンとベーコンがのっています。さらにパティやオニオン、ベーコンの上には2つのスペシャルソースが。一つはスパイシーなバーベキューソースで、もう一つは粒マスタードレリッシュ入りです。

これらのソース、とても気に入りました。普段食べているバーガーとは全く違う味でした。

当初、テキサスバーガーは数量限定ではありませんでした。しかし、値段が高いのにもかかわらず予想以上に売れてしまったため、一日の販売数量を限定せざるを得ませんでした。

第二段は「ニューヨーク」、第三弾は「ハワイアン」、ラストは「カリフォルニア」です。
たぶん全部食べます。マックにとって良いお客ですね。:-)

The first one is "I felt like a fish out of water". The magazine explains it as "I was confused in the unfamiliar circumstance" (Actually, the explanation is written in Japanese, "勝手が分からず戸惑った".) There is an Japanese expression, "まな板の上の鯉(a carp on the chopping block)", which is similar to it literally but the nuance might be different. This phrase means "a situation that you can't do anything but knuckle under someone". I found the "on the chopping block" in an online dictionary, which is like "be pushed into a corner".

The second one is "be packed like sardines", which is suitable to express commuters in a train during the morning rush hour in Tokyo. In Japanese, we say "すし詰めの(状態 etc.)". "すし" is that sushi. You may imagine the one displayed on a plate beautifully and separately. Before Meiji era, people don't eat sushi in a sushi restaurant. They take one home and the sushis are packed tightly into a tiered food boxes(重箱). I didn't know that custom and the origin of the phrase.


とある英語学習雑誌を読んで、"fish"に関連した2つの表現を知りました。

一つ目は、"a fish out of water"。雑誌では「勝手が分からずに戸惑った」という説明でした。日本語には「まな板の上の鯉」という表現があります。言葉としては似ていますが、意味がちょっと違うかもしれません。この意味は、「他人の意のままになる以外にどうしようもない状況」といった意味です。オンライン辞書で"on the chopping block"というのも見つけました。「逃げ場のない状況」という意味だそうです。

二つ目は、"be packed like sardines"。東京でラッシュアワー時に電車で通勤する人達の様子を表すのにぴったりの表現ですね。日本語では、「すし詰め」といったりします。「すし」はあの「寿司」です。お皿の上に綺麗に、そして離れて並べられた寿司を思い浮かべるかもしれませんが、明治時代より前は、お寿司は店で食べるのではなく家に持ち帰るもので、重箱にぎっしり詰められていたそうです。そんな風習もこの言葉の語源も知りませんでした。

The video of the keynote has already been shown both on the Apple's website and the iTunes podcast. Steve Jobs's speech in the event is slow enough for me to catch his words, and most of the words he uses aren't so difficult to understand. In addition, many of technical terms in the presentations are understandable to the Japanese in the IT industry as Katakana words. So, I can enjoy the video without subtitles.

Learning a foreign language through interesting things for you is one of the best way to master it, isn't it?

昨夜から、たくさんの英語のニュースやブログを読んだり、podcastを見聞きしています。全部AppleのiPadについてです。

Keynote の映像が既にAppleのサイトとiTunesのpodcastで見られるようになっています。イベントでのSteve Jobsのスピーチは十分聞き取れる速さで、使われている言葉もそれほど難しくありません。また、プレゼンの中の技術用語には、IT業界にいる日本人にはカタカナで知られているものが少なくありません。字幕なしで十分楽しめます。

自分が興味のあることを通じて外国語を学習するというのは、一番良い方法ですよね。

Several months ago, I was thinking of switching to a Mac. However, I heard a rumor that the Apple's tablet was under development and would be unveiled at the beginning of 2010 or at least in Spring. So, I decided to wait for a while and see if the rumor would come true.

I live in Japan, but thanks to the Internet, I'll be able get the information about their "new creation" almost real-time on some tech-news websites or via twitter. Besides, I just found a live broadcast for the event on USTREAM.

I'm a little sleepy, so I'll take a quick nap for 30 minutes. I wonder I'll wake up..? :)

私のパソコンはWindowsです。数ヶ月前、Macに切り替えようと考えていました。ですが、アップルのタブレットが開発中で、2010年の初めか遅くとも春には発表されるのでは、という噂を聞きました。そこで、少し待ってその噂が本当か見てみることにしました。

日本に住んでいますが、インターネットのおかげで、彼らの "new creation" の情報をウェブサイトやtwitter経由でほぼリアルタイムで手に入れられます。さらに、USTREAMでイベントのライブ中継を見つけました。

Just a short entry.

Do you like tea? I prefer coffee to tea, but sometimes make tea with a tea bag.

Making tea with a tea bag is just an ordinary moment in daily life, but if you put these tea bags into your favorite tea cup, it may bring you a little nicer tea time than usual. (See the photos attached.)

You may realize that the Kanji "青", blue in English, is used in it, and it might remind you an English phrase, "out of the blue". I had known both phrases and meanings , but I didn't know that they have the same origin.

"Out of the blue" comes from "a bolt out of the blue sky", right? "青天の霹靂" derives from a Chinese ancient poem. "霹靂" means "it thunders suddenly", maybe in Chinese.

I think "青天の霹靂" is a kind of big words. We don't usually use it in conversations with friends and families, such as "君とこんなところで会うなんて青天の霹靂だ。(It's surprising that I saw you here.)" You would see it on books or columns in the newspaper or magazines. Oh, I've just remembered that a politician said it in an interview when he was chosen as a member of the Cabinet. I don't know he was really surprised to it, though.


「青天の霹靂」という言葉を聞いたことはありますか？　「その会社が倒産するというニュースは青天の霹靂だった。」のように使うことができます。「青」という漢字が使われているのに気づいて、そこから英語の"out of the blue" が浮かんだかもしれませんね。私は両方の言葉と意味は知っていましたが、同じ由来だとは知りませんでした。

"out of the blue" は、「青空から出る稲光」ということですよね？　「青天の霹靂」は中国の古い詩から来ています。「霹靂」は、（たぶん中国語で）「雷が突然鳴り出すこと」という意味です。

「青天の霹靂」はちょっと大袈裟な表現だと思います。友達や家族との会話ではめったに使いません。例えば「君とこんなところで会うなんて青天の霹靂だ」とか。本や新聞・雑誌のコラムで見るくらいでしょう。そういえば、ある政治家が内閣の一員に選ばれた時のインタビューで言っていたのを思い出しました。本当に驚いたかどうかは知りませんが。
