This is one of samples I'm planning to explain the origin of Kanji.

The Kanji of 東 are the letter formed with two letters, the one is 日(the sun), the other is 木(a wood).

Kanji of 東 shows a direction where we can see the sunrise behind the tree.
Then, it means "the east".

By the way, 京 means the place where our emperor lives.
Once our emperor lived in Kyoto-western of Japan, and then he moved to the east.
That's why we call here 東京- "the eastern capital city".
