President of the United States Donald Trump announced on Friday that America will impose comprehensive tariffs on imports from China, estimated to amount to 50 billion US dollars. This decision has been made based on the investigation on China’s intellectual property violation against America. The investigation was conducted by US government agency, Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).

In addition to imposing extra 25% tariffs on certain Chinese imports, Trump also instructed US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to develop new restrictions to prevent China from acquiring America’s important military technologies.

The USTR began the investigation in August last year, finding that China forced or put pressure on American companies to transfer technologies, by means of joint venture conditions, foreign investment restrictions, administrative review and licensing processes.

According to the USTR, China have had large-scale technology transfers by leading and prompting investment or merger of domestic companies, and also led or supported internet attacks, violating America’s internet system for valuable business data.

Prior to Trump’s announcement, Wei Jianguo, executive deputy director of a Beijing think tank strongly stated “If Trump really signs the order, it will be equivalent to announcing the trade war between China and America.” He added “China will not be afraid and won’t avoid the trade war. China has many countermeasures in areas of automobile imports, soybean, airplanes, and electronic chips. Trump should know it is a bad idea. There will be no winner, and it only does harm rather than good.”

After America’s announcement on the tariff imposing rules, China quickly revealed the revenging measures, which influence from pork, steel pipes, to fruit produces and alcohol drinks, imposing import tariffs of about 3 billion dollars.

According to Bloomberg’s report, senior fellow of China Association of International Trade Li Yong pointed out “Amerca’s action is announcing the beginning of the trade war, but China didn’t react much. The list to impose tariffs on imports appears as a type of revenge, but it is actually a rational result that has been considered carefully.” He said “This action is to send a message—China is capable of taking revenge actions, but we want a peaceful trade environment rather than a trade war.”
