Today I would like to start from here.
(sing…..)
Starry
starry night
paint your palette blue and grey
look out on a summer's day
with eyes that know the
darkness in my soul.
Shadows on the hills
sketch the trees and the daffodils
catch the breeze and the winter chills
in colors on the snowy linen land.

This song was entitled “Vincent”, written by Don McLean released in 1971 which was the top hit in that time. The Starry night was one of Van Gogh’s masterpiece work which I love so much. As the name of the work, his life was short but shinny. Since he’s enthusiasm for painting, he made over 900 paintings and 1100 drawings and sketches since he started to paint at 27 years old for 10 years long before his death. With the passion in painting, he insisted to keep drawing, even he only sold one when he was alive. He went to places from Etten, Den Haag, Nuenen to Paris, those spots also influence his way to draw, he began to change the dark style until he met impressionism and Neo- impressionism in Paris then learned to add some colorful style.

Van Gogh had a teacher who influenced him a lot was, Millet. Even the two people are in the different generation, They are both deeply involved with the agriculture so much. Without training from the academy, he started to sketch and there were so many judges who criticized his work that was out of proportion. He also did some after Millet’s “The Angelus”. Since Van Gogh was a priest before he became a painter, he knew how to show love to others through a borderless way. He spent lots of time in farm with the farmer then observed every single movement when they were working.

About his romance, he didn’t get married for his whole life, he was so in love with his cousin “Kee Vos-Stricker” and he was rejected after he proposed to her. For his enthusiasm, he ran to Amsterdam to see her but she still disagreed his demand. In Dan Hagg, he met a girl “Sien” who earned a living as a hooker. Sien had a child and Van Gogh treated him like his own. Sien played an important role in his life, for sometime she was the model that let him draw. Even they weren’t married, Van Gogh still treated her very well until she restarted to be a hooker again then Van Gogh decided to leave.

The most important people in his life was his brother “Theo”. Van Gogh’s family had 6 children, he was the eldest brother. He had a solid relationship with his younger brother “Theo” who supported him financially very well. We can say if there is no such a great person existed, a great painter can’t ever be born.

I would like to share some of his masterwork through powerpoint.

Painting 1: The Angelus
The original work was drawn by Millet.
Van Gogh said that I felt comfortable when I stayed in countryside, I spent
time with famer, digger, weaver and miner day and night. All of this was
where my ideas from.

Painting 2: Garden of the Asylum at Saint-Remy
Van Gogh was diagnosed with mental disorder so that he was sent into the mental hospital. Even so, he still painted as best as he could.

Painting 3: Road with Cypress and Star
Van Gogh wanted to have a normal relationship and a family. We can see from the works that are always the number two. Two people walk along, two people sit in the cart and two houses stay beside.

Painting 4: The Starry Night
The Starry Night is one of the most well known images in modern culture as well as being one of the most replicated and sought after prints. It is nearly impossible to shy away from this amazing painting.

July 29th in 1890, Van Gogh committed suicide. Even he had gone so soon, he still left lots of masterworks to let people to appreciate. As he said “painting is a faith, and it imposes the duty to disregard public opinion.”
