Which of these is correct?:
(1)あの大きな建物は病院です。
(2)あの大きい建物は病院です。
My textbook is telling me the first one is correct which confused me since I thought adjectives were used like in the second one.
Then it says:
あの大きな白い建物は病院です。
Is there something special going on with 大きい that doesn't happen with 白い?
If the first one is correct can anyone explain why? If not, that's okay. Just knowing which one is correct will help me figure it out. Maybe. Hopefully..I'm just not good with adjectives apparently.

正しくは「あの大きな白い建物は病院です。」だと思います。
会話の中では「あの大きい白い建物は病院です。」と言うこともありますが
これは正しくありません。
形容詞「大きい」が名詞「白い建物」にくっついて修飾する場合は「大きな」に形が変わります。
名詞にくっつかない場合は形は変わりません。
「あの白い病院は大きい」
難しいですね。

My textbook is telling me both of them can be used, in case of 大きい/大きな and 小さい／小さな, only when they are followed by a noun. My textbook says they are "irregular い-adjectives".
白い is not irregular, it is a regular い-adjective. So you have to say 白い建物, like most of the other regular い-adjectives.
In old times Japanese language was a little bit different from that of this day,at that time the word big was not ookii but ookinari I remember. Ookina was ookinaru those days,I remember.
Now we say ookina more than ookii when we use it before noun,but ookii is all right. In most cases adj. ends in i like shiroi(white),but we use ookina(big) and chiisana(small)more often than ookii and chiisai even now. I could be wrong,but I remember I learned like this.We never think why in our daily life:)
We sing like this,ookina kuri no ki no shita de/chiisai higoi wa kodomotachi/chiisai aki mitsuketa/chiisa tenohira ni hitotsu etc.
I feel we use ookina in most cases,and we use both chiisai and chiisana. However when we say ookii oniisan(big brother)it can mean
older brother,but when we say ookina oniisan it can mean tall guy.Chiisai ko(child)is little child,infant.Chiisana ko is small child.I feel so.
