English is generally a bit more descriptive. You should describe what you are trying to gain. Understanding about life etc. It is also more typical to use knowledge, eg; I want to gain my mother's knowledge of cooking.

memory would be more commonly replaced with "stick" or "drive"
Yes, Japanese is less descriptive.
