Should or shouldn't we legalize marijuana?

At the moment there is a controversy in America and other Western countries about whether or not we should legalize marijuana. There are a lot of liberal people who believe that we should legalize marijuana because it is different from other illegal drugs. Firstly, they believe that although marijuana gives a pleasurable feeling when it is smoked the harm it does to the human body and the dependency it causes isn't as bad as other drugs like heroin, cocaine and meth-amphetamine. These people believe that it's the same as smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol, even though it is harmful to health it is still a personal choice. Also if a person's behaviour only influences themselves the government shouldn't be able to arrest them and put them in jail for it. The government shouldn't interfere with people's personal lives.

On the other hand, some other people want to keep marijuana illegal. Because they believe that although marijuana isn't as harmful as other drugs it is still harmful and if marijuana is legalized then a lot more people will start to use it. In this way the negative effect marijuana has on society will become even worse.

The people who support the legalization of marijuana say that even though marijuana is illegal there are still a lot of people who have tried marijuana. Also in the Netherlands marijuana has already been legalized, but the use of marijuana hasn't increased dramatically. So it seems like whether or not marijuana is legal doesn't have a big effect on how much people use it. Furthermore, because marijuana is illegal the government has to spend a lot of money, for example on the police who catch drug dealers and imprisoning people for possession of marijuana. If marijuana was legalized then not only could the governments save money but they could also make money from taxing the sale of marijuana.

In conclusion, the legalization of marijuana is a very controversial issue, whether or not you think it should be legalized depends on what you think is more important: personal freedom or the health of the citizens.
