How do you learn foreign language?

I like watching English movie, it can improve my listening and pronunciation

Hmm, I don't know if it's unique or not, but I mostly watch anime and listen to lots of Vocaloid songs. I don't have enough time to study Japanese "properly", like learning to read and write Kanji, etc.

I first started out learning 2,000 or so Kanji in an SRS program called Anki. Right now I'm in the process of learning vocab through sentences. I have a few grammar books that I'll take example sentences from and enter them into the SRS and it helps me to become familiar with structures and reading. Otherwise I'm watching Japanese film or shows on Youtube, etc. Music plays a part too, of course.

Though, in regard to 'a foreign language,' it depends on which one it is. For a western language, you could probably just read right away where as Asian languages you need to learn a new script or many characters as a first hurdle.

Right now I'm attending a Japanese language school in Kyoto. The teachers speak only in Japanese and we're not allowed to use any other language during class. Even though I've only been here for three months, I feel like I've improved a lot. If you ever get the chance, studying abroad and surrounding yourself with the language you want to study is the best way to learn a language.

I took Japanese classes in college, but now I just learn on my own by looking at Japanese sites, playing games, watching TV shows, etc. Kanji hinders a lot of people, including myself, when learning the language. It is certainly a lot easier for my Chinese friends to learn Japanese though.

This is not exactly an efficient method, but I learn mainly by reading websites, short stories, papers, and blogs. Depending on my mood, I look up unfamiliar words on the spot, sometimes I don't.

Sometimes, I go on a study phase where I focus on a particular topic, ex. four-character compounts (四字熟語). I don't encounter them a lot while reading, but over time, they accumulate and start bothering me enough that I feel the need to study vocabulary blocks like that separately.

I learn vocabulary items from corpus-based frequency lists and make notes in Excel.
I try to learn as much vocabulary and collocations (chunks) as possible.
I use a grammar book as well.
I also have a lot of friends who speak the languages.
With some languages I listen to music.

I like watching anime and J-Dramas. This helps with vocabulary and listening. Also I am learning kanji using various websites.
