In Gwangju, where I live, the 18th of May is the 'Anniversary of the Gwangju Democratizaion Movement'
It's more natural to say or read as 'the 18th of May'.
On May 18th 1980, citizens of Gwangju fought against dictatorial government.
'citizens' plural of 'citizen' (singular)
Many people were killed for democracy and freedom.
'Were' is used for plurals 'was' is used for singulars
It is very sad thing, but because of their deaths, Korea achieved democracy.
More natural.

'I'm proud to live in Gwangju' might sound more natural.

In Gwangju, where I live, May 18th is the anniversary of Gwangju's liberation toward democracy.
On May 18th 1980, the citizens of Gwangju protested the dictatorial government.
Many people died in the name of (for) democracy and freedom on that day.
As unfortunate as that was, through this uprising, Korea was able to achieve a democracy.
It's worth emulating their spirit of self-sacrifice.
I'm proud that I live in (a place like) Gwangju.I'm proud to live in Gwangju.
