Is this sentence wrong or awkward?

Technically not wrong (I think).

But it sounds odd. Keep it simple and it will be more natural (i.e. I like playing baseball).

Correct. Technically, it is a legitimate English sentence, however the meaning is different.

"I like the playing of baseball" means that you "I" likes the concept of the game of baseball being played. This is much different from liking to play it.

Yes, I agree with superEGO. The sentence is correct, but not colloquial (conversational). What are you really trying to say? 'I like basketball.' or 'I like watching basketball.' or 'I like playing basketball.' Tee hee. ^_^
