I'm wondering if the following sentence, written by a native speaker of English, is correct or not.

"The instrument allows observing the internal structure of the sample."

I would write as follows to mean the same:
"The instrument allows the user (or you) to observe the internal structure of the sample."
OR
"The instrument allows (the) observation of the internal structure of the sample."

Is it okay to put the "ing" form after "allow"?
