  • I think you'll find that English speakers don't usually know all the rules to English. Many ways of saying things are widely accepted but not technically correct (I often find myself in that group!) http://www.accu-assist.com/grammar-tips-archive/GrammarTip_if-and-wish-clauses.htm So you are right to use "were" but people also (incorrectly) say "was" (as you can tell by your corrections!)
