I saw a breaking news that Japanese Emperor is considering retiring due to his poor health.

This is the first time in 200 years that a living emperor abdicated.

When his son succeeds, Japanese era name is changed because it corresponds to the reigh of one emperor.

In Japan, most documents require you to write Japanese era name, which is confusing for non-Japanese people who use Christian year.

Heisei is the current era name, started in 1989, thus, the emperor has reign for 27 years.
