The news of strong typhoon made headlines.

The other day, an American asked me whether the hurricane would hit Tokyo.

I wonderd why she said "hurricane" instead of "typhoon", so I looked it up.

The difference is where a tropical storm is developed.

When it is developed in the northwest Pacific Ocean, it is called typhoon, while it is developed in the Atlantic Ocean near the US, the Caribbean Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico is called hurricane.
