Will Japan’s lack of natural resources become a serious problem in the future?

It is certain that Japan are heavily dependent on imports for natural resources. If this situation continued, Japan would have a serious problem.

Japan has depended on imports for natural resources such as gas, oil, iron ore, etc for a long time. In 1950s, the country's energy self-efficiency rate was about 50%. However, now its rate is about 90% along with the increase of the country's GDP. And it seems this trend does not change in the future.

After the disaster of Fukushima, north of Tokyo, the use of nuclear power is limited or some reactors have still stopped from then. We have few options but to import natural resources because we do not supply enough energy from our county.
In addition, it is not avoidable to surge the price of natural resources because of the lack of energy supply and weak yen.

So, if we continue to use the same level of energy in the future, we have to take some action such as looking for sustainable energy or life not using energy too much.
