So one topic that has popped up a lot in people that I talk to is the subject of patriotism, being thankful and serving your country. I am sad to say that many Americans are so ignorant of the world, they have some assumptions that would not match up with reality. I want to write something to hear your opinion my fellow language learners.

Some Americans in my first day of history class was talking of how poor America is. I was thinking to myself "Are these guys idiots"? America... Poor? They went on to bash America and say that all we do i start wars and exploit people around the world. (These students got a horrible grade and none wanted to even debate me, they are sociology/history/literature students).

This is very common. A "modern" American is somehow showed that they should be absolutely critical of their country. They think it is cool and cliche to bash their country and make themselves seen more international or European looking. It reminds me of Paris. The feeling you get when your drinking the good wine, walking around beautiful buildings and the atmosphere. You feel enlightened! These guys are these kinds. They think that this must represent everything French. They will not go to the African housing projects 20 minutes away. But to talk of the goods of fresh sights is common. You have to be in a vacation spot for 2 weeks to see some of the problems of the country. While being citizens long term of there countries they are more likely to recount the problems of their old country.

The simplest way I can put it is its like losing your virginity intellectually if you disown your country and the weight being a citizen carries from it. It is to show that "Hey, I didn't buy that nationalism bullshit they tried to put in the textbooks and this is my response to the government impeding on my rights, yea!!, screw them"!

These kids have grown up with all the securities not enjoyed by previous Americans. They live a life of extreme luxury compared to even kings of the Renaissance time. The average poor person went (in 100 years) from starving in a dirt floor shack in Georgia to poor people actually owning 100,000 dollar homes and 3 cars.

These kids have gone through their whole life with extra help. They have never been poor in America and they never had to deal with just the bare minimum. They are so vastly segregated in experience from other citizens that they live in a sort of bubble. In this bubble the small complaints of an uneducated person may seem vastly ridiculous to us, but its regular babble flowing out of their math for me or you.

Why is America poor in these peoples eyes? Because they know of no other country to compare themselves to. Some have been to plenty of tourists spots, but they have not been to the less advantage sections, just the tourist spots.

The complaints against America that utter from their mouth is the equivalent to a thought like "I am hungry". Its just not important to them! To some people it matters to say "I am an American", some people just do not even care. Woman really do not care about any of these topics, but men are supposed to care of their country. The woman is expected to go and do something else, but this stuff is important to the well being of our country and they dont care!

This is brought on more by Hollywood. It seems "cool" to criticize republicans. Its absolutely crucial that you act as liberal as possible in Hollywood. If you appear any at all of "old American" who is proud of his country they will accuse that person of every crime against civil rights. The end effect is not important in these arguments, these people only want to appear as the moral crusader "helping" the world out.

This seems to be getting to a rambling rant, so what do you guys think?
