Confused about the particle で

I am confident with most Japanese particles (は=topic marker, が=subject marker, に=aiming particle, etc..), but one particle keeps confusing me and I don't get it's use. And that's the particle で.

The questions I have is:
- When should I use the particle で?
- What does the particle で mean?
- In what cases would you use で rather than other particles?
- Can you provide an example sentence using the で particle?

I think で is used after the words which mean places.
For example
私は公園‘で’遊んだ。
私はあの店'で'本を買った。
I haven't studied Japanese grammar so I'm not sure whether it is correct or not.
