[Translation] Downfall of Japanese language (1):

Short sentences have become preferred in texting. In 2005, Yuka Tachikawa, a member of Ms. Takana's office, analyzed some 400 texting stored in college students' mobile phone and found that about 30 characters are used per the message, which is one-third of the result 5 years ago. Ms. Takana said, "They follow an unspoken rule that a reply should be done within 30 seconds to avoid being disliked by their peers. By this rule, they frequently send and receive texting to each other. In an extreme case, texting can consist of only one character."
