Japanese have knotty nationalism. ／日本人の複雑な愛国心.

Do you like your country?
Do you love the country where you were born in?
If you ask these question to Japanese, they would not answer soon, if their answer is yes.
Japanese do not scream they love Japan!
No.If anything they can't.

In World War Ⅱ, Japanese were studied insane nationalism.
The emperor was a living God!
It was honor to die for Japan!
Then, people would say " We love Japan!" in big voice.

When World War Ⅱ was end, Japanese, they were defeated in World War Ⅱ, should change the contents of study to be that things they did in World War Ⅱ were not true..
Therefore, Japanese do not like behavior that they did in World War Ⅱ.
Screaming nationalism reminds Japanese what they did in World War Ⅱ.
Japanese rarely hang out Japanese flag from same reason.
These are because Japan is defeated country.

In case of western country, meanings of nationalism may be different from Japan.
Western people may think why Japanese hesitate to say they love Japan where they were born in?
There are complicated backgrounds in Japan.


皆さんは自分の生まれた国が好きでしょうか？
自分の母国を愛していますか？
日本人にこのような質問をするとたいていのひとはちょっと考え込むでしょう。
たとえ日本を愛していても日本人は大きな声で日本を愛しているとは言わないのです。
いえ、むしろ言えないのでしょう。

第二次世界大戦時、日本人はそれはそれは狂気としか言いようのない愛国教育を受けていました。
天皇陛下は現人神（あらびとがみ）であると学校では習いました。
国のために死ぬことは誇りであると。
当時の人たちは大きな声で日本を愛しているといっていたことでしょう。

そして戦後、戦争に負けた日本は戦争時にやっていたことはすべて間違いだったと教育しなおさなければなりませんでした。
なので日本人は戦時中にやっていたことはやりたがりません。
日本人にとって人前で日本を愛しているということは当時の様相を連想させるのです。
また、同じような理由で日本人は自宅に国旗を掲げません。
戦争に負けた国ならではの複雑な事情なんですね。

欧米では違うのでしょう。
自分の生まれた国を愛しているということになんでためらう必要があるのかと疑問に思うことでしょう。
その辺の事情は是非理解していただきたいものです。
