In 2009, President Obama visited to Japan.
President Obama came to the Imperial palace in Tokyo and met the Emperor of Japan.
When Obama met the Emperor, he did one behavior.
When Obama was going back, Obama bowed to the Emperor .
His behavior did not get into the news in Japan.
However, some American media criticized his behavior!
They thought Obama obeyed to the Emperor.
His behavior was seen as the act of submitting!
In Western countries, people bow to royal families and entertainers bow to audience.
Japanese bow each other everyday!
Western people may think Japanese apologize many times because they bow frequently.
President Obama bowed just as Japanese culture.He did not apologize and obey.
Japanese bowing has three meanings.
Greeting, Appreciating and Apologizing.
When we greet to other, we bow at 45 degrees.
When we appreciate by bowing, we bow at 45-90degrees.
When we apologize, we bow by getting our head down as possible as we can.
Though, we unconsciously bow everyday, so we do not think how degree we should bow.
Because of unconsciousness, we bow while we are calling on a telephone.
Nevertheless, there are no men in front of us.
People first see this custom may be surprised.
We do not apologize many times.

オバマ大統領は御所を訪ね日本の天皇陛下に面会しました。
その時のオバマ大統領のとった行動が少し問題になりました。
オバマ大統領は帰り際見送りに来た天皇陛下に対し深くおじぎをしたのです。
大統領のこの行動は日本では特に話題になりませんでした。
ですがアメリカの一部のメディアはこの行為を批判しました。
オバマ大統領のしたおじぎを日本への服従のように捉えたのです。
欧米ではおじぎは王族など身分の高い方に対して又は演者が観客に対して行われのが一般的なようですが日本では日常的におじぎをします。
外国の方からは、日本人が頻繁にお辞儀をするので謝っているように見えるようです。
オバマ大統領は日本の慣習に従っただけであり、決して服従や謝罪をしたわけではないのでしょう。
日本人のおじぎの意味は主に三つです。
挨拶と感謝と謝罪です。
挨拶するときは少し頭を下げます。45°くらいですね。
感謝の意を表すときはもっと深く頭を下げます。45°~90°くらいです。
謝罪をするときは足や机に頭が付くくらい頭を下げます。
ただ、日本人は無意識におじぎをしているので角度はいちいち考えていません。
無意識なので電話をしているときもおじぎをしてしまいます。
目の前に相手がいないのにもかかわらずです。

Still, I can't figure out why people bow while they are at the phone, but since apparently foreigners who live a long time in Japan soon pick up that habit, it's something that's unavoidable I guess, lol.
We ordinary bow when we apologize.
So, we accidentally bow while we apologize at the phone.
