Aug 05th 2012 10:27 novel English reading note
I read a book named The Name of the Rose written by Umberto Eco. It set the story on the background of disputes between Christian denomination in Middle Ages. The history of Christian is hard for me to understand. However, I still was inspired by some wit of the writer. For example, language is the gift that the God give to people to express themselves. People can protect themselves from defend by using the common language. They are able to debate with others who have different views about a controversy. They can fight for the truth by logical reasoning. In the novel, one of the plots brings the opinion to me. A innocent poor girl was caught by the guard of the cathedral and sentenced to death by fire because she was judged of witch. Before bringing to trial, the girl was screaming in local dialect which made no sense to anyone on the scene. It is so pity that the girl could not say any useful words to plead the innocence of herself. Sometimes, we owe the sound but the voice to express oneself effectively. That girl could screaming to convey her fear and frightening but she is not able to express clearly and convincingly that she is not a witch. However, in fact, she couldn't change her fate doomed to death in the background of middle ages, even she could do that.
