Wow, it's great to see that so many of you also like winter. Around here when I say I really like winter most people glare at me and say things like "Don't say that word."

I almost wrote 冬は大好きです, but it didn't sound quite right (after all, the topic of winter had already been introduced), so I left out the は. I'm not sure why it didn't occur to me to use が instead. In retrospect that's obviously what I meant to say.

You should say, "冬は大好きです。" or "冬が大好きです。" There is a slight difference between these two expressions. When you say, "冬が大好きです。", it suggests, "春や夏や秋ではなく、冬が大好きです。"

As for myself, I prefer summmer because I'm an outdoor person. I would rather go fishing, camping and swimming. However, when it snows, the view around us completely changes. I love snowy views.

When I hear 「今日はずっと雪でした。嬉しいです。冬は大好きです」, I would think like "It's winter already. You are enjoying winter life. You love winter."

When I hear 「今日はずっと雪でした。嬉しいです。冬が大好きです」, I would think like "You has been waiting for winter. It almost has come. You are looking forward to enjoying winter life of this winter."

Don't ask me why^^; I can't explain it logically.

Actally, you can say "冬、大好きです" though it's more colloquial.

Actually, that does seem logical to me. It fits with what Racchan was saying (above), and it also fits with the way Tae Kim's grammar guide explains が as an identifier particle (rather than the "subject particle", as most traditional books explain it, which is clearly not right if you think of "subject" the way we do in English grammar where every verb has to have one and it performs the action of the verb; most Japanese sentences don't even have が, and in those that do it doesn't always perform the action of the verb, so telling English speakers that it's "the subject particle" is at best misleading.)

According to (my interpretation of) Tae Kim's explanation as I apply it to this sentence, 冬が works because winter is being identified not just as _a_ time of year that I like but _the_ time of year that I like particularly -- which is indeed exactly what I was trying to say.

So yeah, I was pretty sure 冬は wasn't really what I wanted to say, but I gave up too easily on finding exactly the right wording. I'm pretty sure 冬が is the wording I was looking for.
