Zonovsky : Kниги (4)

Привет друзья. Вы любите книги? Теперь я читаю "Дремлющий демон декстера" (англ. "Darkly dreaming dexter").

Zonovsky : False friends (2)

Generally, languages are very flexible. They quickly absorb words form other languages. Such words are called "borrowings". Appearing such an ocurrance may carry a lot of advantages but also, a lot of misunderstandings - today, I want to focus on them. Have you ever heard about words called "false friends"? They appear in language that you are learning, and they potentially could be useful(English "motivation" = Polish "motywacja", "bacon" = "bekon", "transport" = "transport"; there are a lot of them, really), but they are not.

a) English meaning
b) Polish meaning

1. a) Chalet = moutain hut (common in the Alps)
b) Szalet = public toilet

2. a) Ordinary = common; nothing special
b) Ordynarny = crude; adjective describing person who behaves in a vulgar way

3. a) Gymnasium = a sports hall; a place where people can play sports
b) Gimnazjum = grammar school; a kind of school where attend pupils aged 13-16

4. a) Hazard = risk, danger
b) Hazard = gambling; taking part in a game that win is random

5. a) Transparent = adjective describing something that let through rays of light
b) Transparent = banner; this is a piece of cardboard in which people place a slogan when they are on a demonstration

6. a) Cravat = a men's scarf
b) Krawat = tie; a smart garment that is tied around neck

7. a) Dress = a garment for women which consists of bodice and skirt
b) Dres = tracksuit; sports clothing consisting of long-leg trousers and a sweatshirt

8. a) Urn = a small conteiner storing ashes
b) Urna = ballot box; a box in which you place your vote during election

9. a) Gust = a strong blast of wind
b) Gust = taste; somebody's liking for something

10. a) Golf = a sport in which you are using a club to hit a little ball to a hole
b) Golf = sport (as before) but this term is also use when we are talking about a polo-neck sweater

Zonovsky : Foreign languages schools (1)

Please, pay special attention to commas and articles. Of course, if something sounds unnatural (even if still grammatical correct), propose a different solution.

Write an essay on: “Is attending a foreign language school useful?”

Having a good grasp of a foreign language is an important skill nowadays. Almost every employer requires the ability to speaking a foreign language, in particular, English. This is a result of globalization. Everything is so close that we need a communal language to communicate – the English fulfills this role. There are a lot of ways to acquire needed accomplishments. Some people become a self-tauhgt man, other sign up for a foreign languages school. In today essay, I would like to consider if attending such place can develop you.

First of all, such solution costs a lot. One term costs about 1800 zloties. It includes classes 2 x 3h a week. With such timeframe you just have no right to learn English! To take in anything in the World you need the time. There are just too less lessons and it is not proportional to the price! With this money, instead of wasting it on such schools, you can spend it on self-study books. On the market you can find a lot of useful educational teaching aids.

Moreover, such schools are being attended by different people. Every person develop their skills in a various speed. One can comprehend a material in what little time, other can has problem with basic issues. Groups often number over fifteen people so it can be quite bothersome.

I have got a friend who is a student of such school. I met him while he was revising a material. I look threw a look at what he was learning and boggled. There were a lot of sentences that he had got to learn by heart, otherwise he would be throw out. I am not saying that it is very often but certainly there are many schools which use really uneffective ways of learning. With self-learning you choose time, place and ways of learning on your own. It really makes learning easier.

To summarise, in my opinion, foreign languages schools are just waste of the time and the money. If you are learning on your own, it is a lot more effective. You do not have to adjust to anybody.

Zonovsky : Playing computer games (0)

Please, pay special attention to commas and articles. Of course, if something sounds unnatural (even if still grammatical correct), propose a different solution.

Write an essay on: “Computer games – time to learn or time to waste?”
Invention of computer completely changed the World. Nowadays, virtual life is an integral part of our existence. People spend most of their time in front of the computer. Some people chat with their friends on Facebook, other watch films, but today I want to focus on a particular group – people who play computer games. Is killing aliens useful or is it just a waste of the time?

First of all, I would like to emphasis that this everything is virtual. For instance, playing a war game in which you are shooting to your enemies will not make you a better shooter in the real life. Operating a real rifle is definitely more difficult. For example, reloading a rifle requires a lot of effort.
Some say that multiplayer games can develop your teamwork skills. In my opinion, this belief is wrong. You do not meet your co-players face-to-face (you communicate with a voice chat). Interpersonal relations are entirely different in the real life. Generally, in the internet you are an anonymous person. You can say everything you want without any consequences. Very often, people become a completely different in the internet. In short, the internet just doesn’t mirror the truth – people as scary children in a fog.
I came across a claim that you can develop your enterprise with playing economy-simulation computer games. It can adjust your mind to exchange but never reflect the real risk. If you will not invest the real money, you will never understand it. You will never see your behavior in the face of loss.

Finally, in my opinion, playing computer games can be used as a way of relax. It will never learn you anything practical. I think that above examples prove it.

Zonovsky : Everybody's looking for something (2)

Please, pay special attention to commas and articles. Of course, if something sounds unnatural (even if still grammatical correct), propose a different solution.

More and more often, young people decide to study two subjects at once. Write an essay in which you show advantages and disadvantages of making such decision.
There is no doubt that money rules the World. Everyone wants to have a big house with a swimming pool in the garden. But how to earn on this everything? It is said that you have to get a good-paid job. The best way to get such job is to graduate from a renowned university. A better option is to make an attempt to study two subjects. I will consider whether it is worth to do it or not.
First of all, studying two subjects potentially classifies you in the-most-educated-people-in-the-country ranking. There is really not many people who graduated two subjects. It means that you are in intellectual elite. It brings about being a tasty morsel at the job market. Under this circumstance, you can have your pick of job offers. Then you are closely to a dream house with a swimming pool.
Regardless of people’s personalities, everyone wants to feel satisfaction from everything they are doing. Fooling around definitely doesn’t make you satisfied - studying two subjects can (but only then when the subjects are interesting to you).

On the other hand, studying two subject can carry some undesirable consequences. One of the most unwanted is shortage of the time. Everyday lectures, spending a lot of time in the public transport, learning – because of this, you are very tired. Moreover, you do not have time to develop your passions, hanging-out with your friends or just usual, everyday, small pleasures.
In addition, this way of studying is ineffectual. Rushing from lecture to lecture cannot has a good impact on your education. You will not prepare really good at any lecture and as a consequence (I mean end of your education) this studying will be worthless.
It is also more costly. You have to pay for books and other essential things that will be needed. One subject is just cheaper.

I think that studying one subject is more valuable. You can developing your skills with a big commitment and the subjects doesn’t clash with each other.

Zonovsky : An essay (1)

Hi,

Write an essay in which you consider advantages and disadvantages of being a child of famous parents. Please, pay special attention to articles and commas! Every other possibilty of that what I'll write is welcomed.

Famous people determine trends. They are respected and loved. We hear about their ups and downs every day. Does their fame bring their children troubles? Is those children’s life harder than a normal child? In this essay, I am going to consider this problem.
First of all, children which have popular parents have more opportunities to develop. Their parents have got many acquaintances that could help them to acquire a lot of unique skills. For example, if descendant of famous person wants to learn playing the piano, the parent could ask some of his friends. It is very possible that somebody knows an outstanding pianist or at least a very good teacher that could give some private lessons.
Moreover, popularity carries wealth so children can afford a lot of material goods. Maybe they are not essential but can cause a lot of joy.
Another advantage of being a child of famous parents is being recognizable. All people want to be regarded as attractive and valuable – fame provides such features. It is easy to receive recognition in people’s eyes. You could easier find friends and love of your life (more or less true). You are treated otherwise than an average Joe.

There are also a few dark sides of being famous people’s child. People think that you have got everything because of your parents. If you achieve something important, people will say that it can be credited to your parents. Your surname condemn you to a lifetime “denunciation”.
Fame is pleasant but it also can take form of an overpowered obsession. Some people could struggle to meet the younger version of their idol so it is possible to being abused. If a parent is really recognizable, you may be guarded with security 24/7. It could be quite bothersome.
Despite of the aforesaid “denunciation”, there will be generating much pressure on you. If you end up like a poor man, living in a gutter, people will say that couldn’t take advantage of your parent’s financial potential.

All things considered, I would rather prefer to be a child of popular parents. There is no doubt that it could be troublesome but the advantages are more measurable.

Words: 363

Zonovsky : Feeling good (1)

Hi! I haven't been here for ages! Of course, it doesn't mean that I haven't been developing my grasp of English. I was going to get to know a lot more but you know how it is.

It's not my homework, I'm just working on my writing skills. Please, pay attention to articles and commas.

Write a story about a sports competition in which, some person from audience accidently caused a dangerous situation to competitors. (200-300 words)

Generosity

It was a cold winter day. I stood up quite early. I was really bored. I hadn't got anything interesting to do, so I decided to go to see my friend who was taking part in a snowboarding competition. After a long journey I finally arrived in the suburbs of Kielce. The place was crowded. People were talking to each other and it seemed that they're having a good time. I found my friend who had just signed up for the men's 150-meter downhill snowboarding race. The registration fee amounted to 45 zloties. We had a small talk and after thirty minutes he was about to begin a race. We decided to throw a look on the prettiest snowboard desk contest. I noticed a man who was standing aside. He was drinking something from a thermos cup. He was looking with mercy on the frozen gathering. He looked like a generous man. There wasn't anything interesting so we headed off to a finish line. The thermos-man followed us. The women's 100-meter race has just ended. The thermos-man poured some tea into plastic cups and hastily set off towards the competitors. He was going to warm them up. While he was running, he stumbled just before two snowboarders and spilled the tea all over their ski suits. They screamed. Pain was engraved on their exhausted faces. Somebody told that was going to call for an ambulance, other came to the conclusion that skills of a sports doctor who's somewhere here would be enough. Eventually, the sports doctor took them to his place and dressed the wounds. He said that it was nothing serious and they would be ready for a next-weekend championship. I nicely reminisce this event now. My friend won and I got a prize for the best supporter!

Words: 300

Zonovsky : Duskiness (1)

Recently, I try to focus on improving my listening skilks but now I have short moment, and I decided to write something. I don't have any idea on topic of my entry, so I'll translate a fragment of some book. It really doesn't matter if it's correct in compare to the text. I only think about grammatical correctness.

(...)And suddenly I experienced a dazzle. This guy was an alien. Therefore a bullet didn't harm him.
I standed up from the floor and I lean against a wall.
- I saw through you, Billy! - I yelled.
He stopped in his tracks.
- Say what you like!
- You're an alien!
Cindy started to laugh.
- I told you, he is an dolt!
I looked at her.
- This man is a fright like a snake, overgrown of bristles with one, huge eye! He looks like human but it's illusion.
Billy was standing there and did't tell any word.
- Where did you met him, Cindy? - I asked.
- In a bar. I don't believe in these crap. He isn't any alien.
- Ask him!
Cindy brusted into laugher again.
- OK - she said. - Billy, are you an alien?
- Huh? (I don't know what expression use there. I think about something like "what?" but without using any words)
- You see, he didn't deny! - I exclaimed.
Billy looked at her.
- Do you believe him?
- Whence, Billy. Grind him down!
- OK, I'm doing it, precious...
He strided in my way again. Suddenly shine the purple light and Jeannie Nitro appeared in the room.
- Jeannie - moaned Billy - I only...
- Shut up, bastard! - snarled Jeannie.

(Probably I'll add something more tomorrow)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCHvGI0-ypA

Zonovsky : It's better to be a man (2)

Remained two hours of listening and an entry to write today... and it's quite late. Here we go!

This entry is my opinion and of course you can have different notion about the subject. Obviously, I encourage to present your view. ;)

I've never wondered about this subject. I've never participated in the war of genders.

I love our straightforwardness and logic. I think everything have to make some logic sense - our life is less emotional. I don't have to wonder about if a cheese like me. I simply make a sandwich. Ok, maybe it's quite figurative example but you surely know what I mean. Less emotions = less problems in earthbound things.
Generally, despite the effeminate of nowaday's men I think that we're still more determined. I even talk about the wholly-existencely decisions but about usual, daily things. I think that it make some evolutionary sense. Man always have to take responsibility for his family moving out from one cave to another. Decisions always were significant and always cary some consequences.

Genes on evolutionary marketplace... Here, matter is simple. If female borned as ugly kid, she is up shit creek without a paddle. Everyone search good genes. If she's ugly what offspring she will born? Ok. She can pile make-up on, do a plastic surgery, if she's fat she could lose the weight, but trurly a ugly person always will be a ugly person. Women's tasks always be raise children and look good-looking. Now, times little changed but this mentality will stay in minds of society still for a long time.
Man always have been chasing around a forest for some beast. Now it's a money beast... What am I going? I think that quality of men's gens depends on his ability to survive and providing dignifiged being for his family.

I think it's looking so:

Man noticed a georgeous woman -> Wow, what a beautiful legs, wide loins (Wide loins - have you ever wondered about why women are weak runners in compare to men...? ;) Man has narrow that running after animals - women has wide that born children). Her face is young-looking. She certainly give birth a offspring which will be cute and get along very well because it will be attractively-looking and so on. A vicious circle.

Woman noticed a handsome guy -> Why woman love a singers, actors etc.? Because they cope well in a society. Of course they aren't attractive in visual but only in social sense. Obviously, young, sportive man > old, fatty grandfather. You surely get a handle on what I mean: Appearance of man is secondary thing in compare to resourcefulness.

Really late for me! I was going to write more but it will waits for a next part which probably appear tomorrow.

Have a good one.

Zonovsky : A word (0)

Such unproductive day! I was watching the Roland Garros (tennis tournament) and eating sweets the all day. In total, I'm still watching tennis and eating sweets, the only difference is that I'm laboriously trying to write something on this noble site. N. Djokovic and N. Devilder are playing now. Earlier, I was watching match between R. Federer and N. Mahut. I presumed that Mahut break off although one set and it happened.

Anki! Anki! Anki!
Do you know Anki? It's a program for revising words in language, which you're learning. At the beginning you have to add your own words or download them from a list which create users. On your screen appear some words and then, you have to choose in which extent do you know them. And do it over again.

I don't understand why a lot of people are exciting about this program. Once, I used to use it... and when comes time to revise some words I wanted to throw up. It was so boring. I think that every activity should deliver although some pleasure (Heh, I was wondering about this word... I wasn't knowing how to write it. Stupid misunderstanding. Pleasantness? Plasantment?). I quick gave up with this programme.

I also used to use flashcards in the paper form but it isn't also for me.

What is the best method?
I don't know. Once, I was reading () sports articles and I was writing down () unknow words. Then, for example, I encountered the word "apparently". I wrote down around 10-15 sentences with this word. Now, I haven't any doubts what it means. It was only the disposable episode. I want to "come back" to this method and using it with unknow words from a book which I'm reading. Shortly, I'll end reading this book. I was already have a looksee for some other books, but I didn't find anything interesting. Maybe could you give me some "light" titles? I'm reading "Air Babylon" by Imogen Edwards-Jones and it's going quite good.

Regards,
Zonovskyj ;)

Zonovsky : Dyslexia and others... (0)

I'm looking at that small calendar on right the side of lang-8 and what am I seeing? The incredibly huge gap. Of course, it isn't some kind of obligation but looking retrospectively at that I haven't writen since... Brr... A lot of time.

Unfortunately, I was born in these times when that all was began... My kid in sandpit? No way! There are a lot of germs!

Nowadays is difficult to be an child. On Monday horse-riding, on Wednesday French, on Friday music. Ok, I understand the need of sowing some hobbies in the child, but if he is bored while an additional French lessons why those freaking ambitious parents force their children to do that? They're simply the bottom. Themselves achieve an shit. Yeah, my child will be unique! I'll plan him all life path and give him name like clown! No, if you give your child strange name like Nataniel or Olaf (I think about Polish realities), he won't be unique. The truth is: weak character of child + atypical name = being the laughing-stock in school.

Heh, the best are liberal parents and their so-called non-stress (Or suggest there other word) upbringing. They allow to bite, beat etc. themselves by children. Obviously, they have to outcharge their emotions! Moreover, children have permission to destroying furnitures and eating by hands, because then, they are developing.

God! These children aren't dyslexics, dysgraphics or anything like that. They are simply an idiots, and the parents owe for the whole thing. An child at all doesn't need a private school and all of that shit. I was attending to normal school, I was eating a gooseberry straight from the bush, and I was playing the whole day in peekaboo running around the basement... And I'm alive!

Let them live like a child ;)

Curious article about swearing in Poland - the one swearword which have a lot of opportunities: http://www.linguatrek.com/blog/2011/07/how-to-swear-like-a-pole-pierdoli%C4%87

I'm (Now, I wanto use the phrase like Polish "Jarać się" which in verbatim translation means "burn/be on fire" and in colloquial speech means that someone is very exciting about something. Do you have anything similar? Obviously, I mean about something informal.) about that:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxBcblOx-ok

Best wishes!

Zonovsky : Few things (1)

Ok. I haven't written since Friday. I have to change it! ;) I'm going to do few things today, so I'll try to write this entry quickly.

Saturday (yesterday) was quite interesting day.

I was on the county (Small explanation: Poland is divided into 16 provincies, 379 counties and 2479 boroughties) tournament in basketball. It was compete of grammar schools. The level of competition was really poor. There was only three teams.
Our team wasn't playing as first. Away teams (Competition was in town where I live) after short warm-up started to play. These teams were really poor. It was looking like the paralympics.
Hour has came for us. First game we won in result 35-7. We thought that next was going to similarly easy...
We disregarded our next rival a little bit. Our coach set up people from second squad. It almost ended up tragically for us. We won only 11-10. In winter we won similar competition.

I spontaneously decided to go fishing. I quickly packed up few necessary things and hit the road! I was fishing at all short time. Fishing wasn't resultful. My result were only two little Pikes (around 35cm) and also two little perches (~15 cm). I'm going to fishing also next Saturday! With my buddy we're going to discover new fishery ;)

Last thing is the final of Champions League. I heard opinions that it's waste of time etc. because there aren't playing Real Madrid or Barcelona. And so what? These teams were simply worse than Chelsea and Bayern. Little digression: I always piss off when the football commentators saying that the team A merit to win or not. Bullshit! Simply the team which (Or if am I saying about the group of people I have to use "who"?) score more goals is better. If thay throw their situations away and their rivals had one situation which took advantage of it... Oh, sorry man.
Generally the game was quite good. When Muller score the goal I thought that the match is over, and here the pleasant surprise! After Drogba's goal I knew that we'll have the penalties. In extra time very rarely somebody score a goal. I regret. I was going to bet that Chelsea all competition... It was course 7.50. What a pity!

Later.

Zonovsky : I don't like fat people (1)

I don't like fat people. Of course I don't sneering from them or something like that. I don't like them because they are idlers. Instead of change something in their life, they take for a chocolate bar again... Oh my god! Why am I fat? <cry> ;( Who is guilty? I know the answer:

Genes are responsible for everything! Uhm... Maybe in 7% cases (I think generally about diseases). The rest are guzzlers and so.

Obviously, I think about people who are really fat, not about teens who have hang-up about their size.

I've never been fat. I have rather the normal weight. I can't imagine myself as fatty. If I was fat person, I would can't sleep. I would try a lot of diets, I would try to run seven times per week. I would try everything.

Generally, fat people are only the example. I want to note that laziness is the worst thing in the world. I am trying constantly.

Have a good day! ;)

I overdosed English. Today in school on Polish lesson (then, we was writing a note) I wanted to denied Polish word "Bunt" (rebellion). RIGOR MORTIS had set in and it was impossible to move him.

3. She SPARK UP her cigarette (...)

I don't understand this. I found that the phrase "spark up" refers to smoking marijuana or other soft, but illegal substances. It also referss to smoking ordinary cigarette (I don't know, maybe cigarettes are illegal in Great Britain...? :D) How is it?

4. Meaning(s?) of "Essex man" - I found some informations but it's quite vague.

5. (...), and hundreads of bits of plastic ripped of complimentary terry socks or warm face flannels litter the lenght of two aisles.

6. What is meaning of "haul out"?

From this book (Air Babylon) I found out that in Polish exsist words: Koroner (Eng. coroner) and Parweniusz (Fr. parvenu). :D

Incredible, better than the most of thrillers. 1. "No" as "Yes"
I think it's strange. Generally, around the world word "No" is using as the denial. In Poland, in informal situations (For example, on interview you can't use this word) we use word "No" if we accept something. I don't know where it came from. This expression is using very often.

If you don't speak with Polish pronouncation, and you emphatically waving head from side to side while saying this phrase, people certainly understand that you want to contradict.

Sometimes, young people add letter "m" and arise word "Nom". This of course also mean "Yes".

2. You can't drink alcohol in public places
If you drink alcohol in public places, you expose for get the mandate to the tune of 100 zł (£20). No matter if you drink the weak beer or "severe" hooch. This law is to counteract the alcoholism. :D I think this law is very stupid. For example, you can drink in "beer garden", and standing several meters near you can't. Paranoia. People who brawl in public places after dringing alcohol are rare phenomenon. And priest could drink at work... :D
