Are Japanese people incredibly patient ?

PUBLIC_FLAG_#{@journal.pf_int} RSS feed of Snoopy's latest journal entries Feb 10th 2011 01:46 japan situation
In the past few weeks, the revolt against the Mubarak administration in Egypt has been drawing considerable worldwide attention. A few days ago, my Japanese friend living in China complained, saying that more websites had been blocked. She guessed that the civil disobedience made the Chinese government more nervous. Given that the movement have reverberated around the Middle East, it's clear that the government is afraid that a chain reaction will be set off in China. The fact that Facebook page etc.have fomented the revolt seems to make the government tighten controls on access to websites.

Actually, these things remind me of statements made by some well-known Chinese people. Although they don't know one another, they all say: "the Japanese economy has been sluggish in the past two decades, but Japanese people have never revolted or held a massive demonstration against the Japanese government during that period. It's unbelievable but amazing. Japanese people are incredibly patient. If a recession lasted such a long time in China, there would be a revolution". They also insist that you should try to understand how difficult unifying China is before you criticize Chinese government's policies.

As you may know, China and Japan have developed a relationship of great mutual economic dependence. So, in Japan, no country is more frequently reported in the news than China. A lot of issues between the two countries are always discussed.

I just wanted to tell you that I read your entry, and I do not have any real corrections. Your English is quite good.

I see. Thank you for telling that.

OH~~your entry has an great impreestion on me !!
I am from China . I don't think there will be any chain reaction set off in China .Because on the one hand , certainly ,Chinese people are under strict control of govornment ; on the other hand , i can feel that the economy of China is still waying up rapidly despite of the great inflation . For me, these days , i have visited many relatives during the chinese new year , most of them are agreed that they have earned more in 2010 .
And i am surprised to find that , in Japan, no country is more frequently reported in the news than China. Haha . In china , USA is reported the most freguently . But my friends are affected deeply by Jpanese culture , such as Japanese songs ,movies and so on .HAHA

Hi collins
Thank you for reading the entry and leaving your comment.

>I don't think there will be any chain reaction set off in China.
I don't think, either. I think that a chain reaction is unlikely to set off in China.

I often hear Chinese people saying that China will be stable as long as the Chinese economy is growing, and this is the intension of the Chinese government. On the other hand, there are serious social problems in China which can trigger a revolt or a massive demonstration. It has been reported in Japan that the Chinese government always pays a lot of attention to this kind of movements.

> In china , USA is reported the most freguently .
I know. It's natural.

In Japan, I think that we can get various information about America on the internet very easily. In contrast, it's not that easy to get information about China on the Internet even if you can read Mandarin. I guess that this is another reason why China is frequently reported in the news.

Hi Snoopy こんにちは !!
Thank you for your long comment .Haha .Your English is brilliant !!

You are right . There are many social problems in China as there are still a lot of poor people , unlike Japan .

Haha .I am sorry to find that my English is so poor that i can't express what i want to say about the policy of international affair.

However, although my English is poor, i started to learn Japanese since several days ago . My ambition is to handle these two kinds of languages . Because i major in Electronics Science and Technology in university in Guangzhou , and Japanese are good at this while they are a leader in this field . So i hope to work in Japan or in a Japanese firm in China ..Haha

Hi collins

Actually, Japan has a pile of social problems. Democratically-elected politicians and Japanese people have created the society with many problems. So, we all have to take responsibility for them.

> there are still a lot of poor people , unlike Japan
Income gap between the rich and the poor in Japan has become wider recently. The number of people who cannot earn enough money to make a living has been increasing, which is a serious problem.

> i hope to work in Japan or in a Japanese firm in China
I hope that you can make it happen.

I think if the government tried to block facebook in Australia there would be a revolution!

Even if the Japanese people demonstrated against the government, would it do any good since Japan is a democracy?

Hi kathrynoh
Thanks for your comment.

>I think if the government tried to block facebook in Australia there would be a revolution!
If it happened in Japan, there would be a revolution, too.

>Even if the Japanese people demonstrated against the government, would it do any good since Japan is a democracy?
Good point! I think that the election in August, 2009 was a revolt against our government although the new government doesn't work well, either.

Around 1960 and 1970, there were massive demonstrations against Japan-U.S. Security Arrangements. A lot of ordinary people like housewives attended the demonstrations. Although I don't remember how the demonstrations exactly affected the agreements, the movements forced the government to change its decisions.

This was a very interesting read!
I cannot see much similarity between the situation that led to the revolts in Egypt and the situation in Japan.
From what I understand the movement in Egypt is demanding democratic reform, which is very different from the prolonged economic slump that Japan is suffering from.

I cannot see, either.

Is it perhaps possible that Japanese people are generally more patient because of the historical difficulties they have faced? An example might be with animosity towards both American and Japanese P.O.W.'s (prisoners of war) during World War II.

The travesty there was that my country blew up your country with 2 atomic bombs (in order to end the war) at that time and then was told to help rebuild it by order of our president.

(Perhaps I am assuming too much here.)

My father visited your country after that war, & enjoyed Japan very much.

This was referred to as "American occupation" many years ago.
