When I was a kid, there was a pop-up type toaster in every family in Japan.
Japanese traditional breakfast had been rice and miso soup, but MacArthur had changed everything.
As time goes by, everything has changed, and pop-up type toasters have gone with Macintosh computers, just as though "gone as flying toasters". (^0^)
Now every family in Japan has オーブントースター (a toaster oven), and a Windows computer.
Last night I cleaned our toaster oven with my daughter, while my wife went out.
My daughter and I tried to make a surprise present for my wife, which was a new-looking toaster oven.
It was terribly dirty. We cleaned it for more than an hour. It became clearer, but it was still nothing but new-looking. Anyway we tried to do our best for 30 minutes more.
The outcome was what I had supposed to be, unfortunately.
My wife didn't recognize the change of the oven this morning.
She was too busy with her housework.

The traditional Japanese breakfast used to be rice and miso soup, but MacArthur had changed everything. I'm not sure what you mean by MacArthur- I thought it was a company that made toasters but I can't find it on Google.
As time has gone by, everything has changed, and pop-up type toasters have gone the way of Macintosh computers, just as though "gone as flying toasters".Again, I don't understand this expression.
It became cleaner, but it was still nothing but new-looking.
The outcome was what I had predicted, unfortunately.

Douglas MacArther is the top commander of GHQ―SCAP (=General Headquarters of the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers). After the WWII ended, he came to Japan and ruled Japan.
"Flying toaster" was one very charming "after-dark" character of Mac.
I think it was very popular among Mac fans in Japan.
A lot of toasters with two winds are flying and chasing toasts.
Anyway we tried to do our best for 30 more minutes.
It had double holes, and it was able to bake two toasts at a time.
So when I baked two toasts at a time, there was no problem.
I just only use both holes.
However, when I baked one toast, I had to decide which hole to choose.
In such case, the toaster machine suggested which hole I should choose.
"Please use this side, when you bake only one toast", it said.
I haven't known why I should choose the side, until now.
I don't understand the reason.
Sorry! It is a very tiny thing. Maybe anyone doesn't matter.....
Does you toaster have such a rule?

While cleaner, it still didn't look new.
