Yesterday, a robbery was occurred at the post office near my university.
They say the criminal had something like a gun.
I'm scared, but I think it was a fake gun, cuz we ordinary cannot get a gun in Japan.
Can you get a gun in your country?

That's scary. It is actually really easy to get a gun in the US which many people don't like. Most people I know own one for hunting. Though a lot of people also keep them for security, because if someone is going to commit a crime, it is most likely with a gun, so people like to feel safe by having one too. But making them easy to buy for security makes it also easy to buy one to use for crime. It is silly logic.

"I think it was a fake gun" suggests that you are fairly certain that it was a fake gun. It would usually be said only if you had some direct evidence supporting this conclusion.

"I think it must have been a fake gun" conveys the fact that you are making a conjecture based on indirect evidence.

"Cuz" is a slang short form, and a spelling used only on the internet (people who use it also tend not to use a capital letter for the personal pronoun "I"). It is rarely used in writing at all, but the correct spelling is 'cause, with the apostrophe indicating the missing syllable.

In England, people who live in the countryside sometimes have guns but it's not common like it is in the USA.

I did a bit of research on this. I know that ownership of guns is a problem in the US, but personally, I don't know anyone who owns a gun, so I think the perception of this by people in other countries may be somewhat inflated.

I was shocked to find out that the estimates of the proportion of households in which someone owns a gun run between 35% and 43%. On an individual basis, about 25% of all adults own guns. This is truly scary. :-(

I guess I should have realized this, because one year when I taught at a college in a small town, almost every male between the ages of 14 and 70 vanished into the woods during deer-hunting season.

It is not true, however, that a significant number of people walk around daily carrying guns. The two primary uses of guns are for self-protection in the home (against wild animals in some places, but mostly against human intruders) and for sports (hunting and target shooting).

Personally, I would prefer much tighter gun control laws; but there is a powerful organization called the NRA (National Rifle Association) which has successfully lobbied against this.

I have lived in the US for 57 years, and the only time I have ever encountered someone other than a policeman carrying a gun was when I went on a canoe trip with a friend in Alaska. Since we were camping out a couple of nights, she and her husband insisted on bringing it along just in case we had to protect ourselves from bears. Whether or not that was a realistic fear I don't know, but I imagine bears might be attracted to the food one brings along for camping.

So I still think that people outside the US have an inflated idea of how common it is to encounter someone carrying a gun here.
