啊色 : Italy Movie "Cops and Robbers" (0)

I watched a Italy movie called "Cops and Robbers" on my computer. It was produced at 1951, over sixty years ago. As I expected,it was a black-and-white movie.
It was a comedy movie. As written in the title, there were two heroes: a cop and a robber. The story took place in Italy just after the World War II. In the beginning, the robber cheated a American tourist 30 dollars. Then the tourist asked help from the police. A fat cop caught the robber with great effort. However, the robber was quite foxy and successfully escaped when he went to the bathroom.
The fat cop got severely scolded for his fault. His senior told him that he would be fired unless he could catch the robber in thirty days. In order to keep his job, he began to search for the robber everywhere.
Fortunately, he found the address of the robber in the archives. But the fat cop did not meet the robber in his home as he left home many days ago. For collecting more information, he made friends with the robber's family members.
At the deadline, the fat cop finally met the robber as what was desired. One thing unexpected happened. After thirty days communication with the robber's family, the fat cop turned to be sympathetic with their living conditions.
In the end, the robber went to the police with the fat cop, who promised to take care of his family.

啊色 : Baby's Smile (0)

I am reading a book "Intimate Behaviour" these days. The meaning of smiling is a main topic in this book.
Different from other primates, man's face is not covered with hairs. Taking this advantage, man's smile can be easily recognized by other people. After been born, babies cry loudly automatically, but smile could not be found on their faces. Two months later, baby begins smiling.
At that time, babies leave the uterus and are thrown into a totally strange world. They are anxious for parent's love. However, they are too weak to do anything except lying on the infanette.
Therefore, they develop two powerful weapons: crying and smiling. Most of the time, they use crying to express their pain. But, smiling do not always indicates their happiness. They use smiling to hold their parents around them, just like hugging their parents with arms. Therefore, similar with crying, smiling is a method to attract more attention from other people.

啊色 : Physics Annual Meeting (0)

Last weekend a big annual meeting was held by the physical department. At the same time, we celebrated the 60's anniversary of the physical department as well.
1952 was a special year for Chinese high education, as a countrywide and far-reaching adjustment was held in colleges. It was frequently called "college and department adjustment". All the famous universities were involved into it. Many departments of different colleges were combined. Therefore, after this adjustment, some universities enlarged and strengthened, whereas others were harmed and weakened.
The Fudan university was one of the biggest beneficiaries. Many celebrated professors collected in Fudan university. The physical department of Fudan university was established under this condition.
Chinese people always pay much attention to 60's anniversary of everything. It was also the case for the 60's anniversary of physical department. A lot of schoolmates came back from aboard, especially from USA. This celebration lasted two days.

Have you ever watched the comedy television series "Friends". It is very popular in China. I watched parts of it two years ago.
Just now I read an article reviewing the main story of Friends. I love Rachel most in these roles. I can vividly recall her first occurrence. After escaping from her wedding. she rushed into the center cafe with the white bridal veil to look for help from Monica. At that time Rachel was very nervous and totally had no idea about future life.
Her parents were very rich and therefore she had a lot of credit cards. She planed to live on these cards for a period of time. However, her lovely friends looked down on her naive idea. They cracked their minds to try to persuade Rachel to discard her cards and lived on herself. In the end, she followed their advice and cut all her cards. At the moment of her cutting, all her friends cheered loudly for her courage.
From this moment on, Rachel threw away familiar and comfortable life and threw herself into a bitter and sweet life. Her choice was absolutely right despite her suffering.
Now, I also confront with a dilemma. I hope I can make a right choice and go forward steadily and confidently.

啊色 : Her Voice Forum (5)

This afternoon I attended an activity called "Her Voice Forum". All of the founders of this forum are women, who are eager to inspire women to find, chase and fulfill their dreams. In order to achieve this goal, successful or influential women are frequently invited to share their experience. Their stories are believed to be able to inspire more people.
This afternoon, there were three special guests: one writer, one pianist and one artist. I was totally moved by the story of the artist. Her name was Zizi Su, 21 years old, a junior student. She had a tragic childhood. Her parents divorced when she was 3 years old. And then she was sent to her grandmother and was raised by her. Three years ago, she went into a famous university. But she did not have enough money to support her education. She tried a lot of temporary jobs in order to earn money. She even worked as a body model.
It's well-known that Chinese people are relative conservative. Outer criticism flooded around her in no time. Fortunately, her heart was very powerful and she withstood all the pressure. Now she sees the dawn of light.

This afternoon I went to the Pudong New District by subway. After I got off, I walked on the Century Avenue Road from west to east. Suddenly I observed a huge sculpture far away and began to walk toward it.
When I got near this sculpture, I found it's shape looked like a huge sundial. As shown in the above photo, there was a long needle penetrating a big panel.
The sculpture was located in a big public park. Many people were flying kites around the sculpture. When I stood in front of it, I found a monument giving a brief explanation of this sculpture.
At the same time, a foreigner asked me with a smile:"Can you speak English?". I answered "Yes, of course". Then I tried to translate the Chinese characters on the monument to him. It was really a difficult business for me, as my vocabulary was not enough. Fortunately, he knew a few Chinese characters and I made myself clear with the help of body language. It was a interesting experience.

啊色 : Taking a Walk (2)

It was cloudy in this afternoon. As a result, the temperature was agreeable despite the summer. I took a walk around my campus at 7:30 PM. At this time the sun had set down and therefore all street lamps turned on. In the dim yellow light, all the roads in campus looked very warm and friendly.
I walked alone putting hands in my pockets. Occasionally I met some friends on the road. Suddenly a bell rang. Many students rushed out the teaching buildings and the main streets were flooded in a short time. Then minutes later, these streets returned to quiet.
I like walking very much. Every time when I meet with difficulties, I prefer to take a walk alone and try to find a solution. Now I am involved in a trouble. I am in a dilemma and hesitate to give a choice.
After two and an half hours walk, it began to rain slightly. At this time, my mood already became better. Therefore, I went back to my dorm to write this diary.

啊色 : Having Lunch with Professor Marvin Cohen (1)

Usually, there is a physical lecture in Tuesday afternoon given by profound professors from other universities or other countries. This afternoon, the speaker was professor Marvine Cohen. He was a famous professor at UC Berkeley working on computational physics since 1965. Before the lecture, selected students had a lunch with him. It was fortunate for me to sit next to him on the dining table.
Professor Cohen was very confident and talktive. He gave us a brief introduction about his group at UC Berkeley. He had six students at present, four Ph. D and two Post Doc. He was very friendly to his students. He controlled student's number less than seven since he began his teacher career. If the students had exceeded seven, he did not think he could direct their researches carefully.
He told us a joke in America. After a teacher said "Good morning" in a class, the postgraduate students replied "Good morning". The undergraduate students, however, said nothing and busily wrote "Good morning" in their notebooks.

啊色 : A Nice Auntie (1)

Tonight I went to watch a documentary again. Different from yesterday, the location changed so far away from my dormitory that I had to spend an hour to get there by subway. After watching the documentary, I tooke the subway to get back.
Shortly after I got on the subway, an auntie came in accompanying a very old woman sitting in a wheelchair. Accidentally the auntie sit beside me. I tried to talked with her. I asked her if the old women was her mother. She answered yes. Her mother was already 88 years old and herself was 62. When she said, there was always a sweet smile on her face. She graduated from high school at 1967. At that time, most students had to leave home and worked in remote villages. Fortunately, she was the only child in her home, therefore, she was lucky to stay at Shanghai with her parents. She takes care of her mother everyday despite that her mother can not even walk by herself. She said that she never takes her mother as a burden. What a nice auntie.

This afternoon I planed to attend a lecture held around my university. However, when I arrived the lecture hall, I found I mistook the time. This lecture will be held next Sunday.
Fortunately, a documentary exhibition was going on in this hall. I did not want come back with nothing. Therefore, I decided to see these documentaries. Audiences were less than thirty. I went straight to sit in the middle of the first row.
The documentary recorded the whole year life of a business man in 2008. It began in the morning of January 1st, 2008. The actor lived in Beijing, the Capital of China. He ran a successful advertisement business. In order to expand his corporation, he was trying every way possible to find investments. He negotiated with many unit trusts. All these negotiations failed in the end. One of these negotiations even proved to be a trap. To make things even worse, in the middle of this year his wife divorced him. The documentary ended on the last day of 2008. The year of 2008 was really a painful year to him.

啊色 : Graduation Performance (0)

It's in the middle of May. One fourth of students in every university will be graduating and hence leave their campuses two months later. The atmosphere of departure dominates my campus as well.
Tonight I saw a drama given by graduating students majoring in film and television art.
I arrived at the theater 20 minutes earlier than it began. It was a small theater holding only 120 seats, which obviously did not satisfy the crowd of audiences. The organizer had to add a few rows of folding stools in the theater.
The drama told a story about a Shanghai family having four children. The story began at 1970s, at which the living condition was very poor even in Shanghai, the second biggest city of China at that time. When it went into 1980s, people's lives were changing dramatically. However, the more people earn money, the less the familial affection maintains among family numbers. When the four children grew up, there were more and more disputes among them. In the end, they turned against with each other and three children left home.

啊色 : Backbone of a Book (1)

If you write twenty thousand words, do you think of going to a press in order to publish it? If you are brave enough and tell your idea to an editor, he will regret that twenty thousands words is too few to be printed to a book. The editor will explain that the backbone of book with only twenty thousand words is too narrow to be written anything. This explanation sounds reasonable. If a book must be printed in paper, the editor is absolutely right.
However, our world is taking deep changes. Every thing in our lives is influenced profoundly by computer. As a result, book can not be defined in its original way. Nowadays, publishing a book is so easy on the internet. As long as you want, you can publish anything on your homepage without been printed on paper, even if it has only twenty thousand words. This freedom takes the advantage that the carrier of book is changing from paper to computer. Every advantage has its disadvantage. As a result of this freedom, book does not long represents knowledge. It may be nonsense.

啊色 : Men's Toilet for Women (1)

It's well-known that the men's toilet is different from that of women. Women usually take more time to pass water than men because of physiological difference. However, the size of women's toilet is the same with that of men. Therefore, an interesting thing happens. Women frequently wait in line in toilet, but similar condition rarely occurs in men's toilet.
Many people thinks out various kinds of methods to overcome this difficulty. One way to solve this problem is to open the men's toilet to women. Obviously this solution sounds ridiculous. But after thinking over it, you may find it is seasonable and practicable(or feasible) to some extent.
I heard of this idea for the first time in a lecture given by a professor from Taiwan the day before yesterday. The speaker told us that this solution had turned to reality in his university. They had adjusted the equipment of men's toilet for the usage of women. Currently all the women can go into both men's and women's toilet, but the reverse is not permitted.

啊色 : Choral Concert from Emory & Henry College (0)

There was a choral concert tonight in my university. The singers were students of Emory & Henry College. As soon as I arrived at the theater, I spot these American guests. They were all in black suit.
In the beginning, they sang some English songs. I could hardly understood lyrics, because my aural English is poor. To my surprise, they sang a famous Chinese song in Chinese in the middle of the concert. Suddenly, all the audience on the scene became excited and enthusiastically applauded at the end of this song. I think it was really difficult for them to remember the lyrics of Chinese song. They want to be friendly and affectionate toward the Chinese students. Thank the students of Emory & Henry College.
At the end of the concert, the leader of this chorus told us that his college was founded 175 years ago and has over one thousand students at present. There was a badge on all singers' breasts. It was composed of the National flags of both America and China. They indeed tried their best to show their friendship to us.

Last night, I attended a lecture, which was ended at 8:30 PM. After the lecture, I went out of the lecture hall. On the way to my dormitory, I accidentally heard a fascinating music. Following this sound, I arrived at the a big classroom, which was packed with students. The "Top 10 Singer Contest" was going on. None of the seats was vacant and hence I had to stand at a corner.
Every singer was elaborately dressed. Their shining costumes were very attractive. They sang and danced at the stage. The theater lighters changed colors frequently. I enjoyed all these things very much.
Half an hour later, one singer walked up to the stage. When the music played, we found that he chose to sing our university anthem. All the students on the scene stood up and sang the university anthem together. I was moved by the scene immediately. I hope one day I can love this university as much as they do.

啊色 : Taiwan (3)

If you are familiar with China, you must hear of Mainland and Taiwan.
Taiwan is big island in the south of China. It used to be a province of China and was once occupied by Japanese in World War II.
After the end of the second World War, this island returned to China at 1945. Unexpectedly, a civil war broke out just after the War with Japan. In 1949, the Communist Party won the civil war and the Kuomindang Party retreated to Taiwan.
Tonight, a professor coming from Taiwan gave us a lecture about the journalism of Taiwan.
The government of Taiwan has little influence on the journalism. In other words, the televisions and newspapers can report almost everything as long as they want. Their major goal is to obtain more economic benefits. It looks like democratic. However, medias are full of bad news in order to attract people's attention, as people have less enthusiasm on good news.
He was anxious about current situation of Taiwan's medias. He think the only way to get rid of this shortcoming is improve the cultural quality of the whole people.
Last night, a lecture called "Discover the Deep Sea" was held. It's title fascinated me. After a quarter hour's ride by bike, I arrived at the lecture hall.
The speaker told us plenty of interest things about the deep sea. One hundred years ago, human beings believed that there was absolutely no life in the deep ocean. The reason was very simple and reasonable: Sunlight could only penetrate 200 meters seawater and hence the deep ocean was completely dark. Therefore, photosynthesis of plants stopped and animals had no food.
However, the previous assumptions proved to be wrong. With the development of submarine boat, humans can even reach the ocean floor of ten thousand meters deep. We are totally astonished to find a vigorous world under the sea. As you can see from the above picture, there is a submarine chimney, which is hot lava. There is full of lives around it. The submarine chimney provides heat and inorganic elements to germs, which are the food of other animals. Human beings know nothing about these lives.
There are plenty of secretes in the deep ocean waiting for us to explore.

啊色 : A Lecture: Book and Newspaper (5)

Today is Tuesday. It's the busiest day for me in a week as there are a good deal of lectures and play every Tuesday. According to information on the website, today has fifteen lectures besides a solo concert from morning till night.
This afternoon, I attended a lecture about publishing. There were two lecturers. The first one was a subeditor of a book company. The other was a manager of a newspaper. The first lecturer shared his experience in editing books. He gave a brief introduction of a list of books edited by him. One of them happened to be read by me three months ago. He said that the major task of editor was deleting. Generally, at least 20 percent content of a book was deleted before been published. It is well-known to authors and editors that writing is free whereas publishing is limited.
The lecturer working for a newspaper told an interesting thing: The more the newspaper is sold, the more the corporation lost. The reason is that the cost of printing newspaper is less than its prize. The deficit is compensated by the profit of advertising. The situation is totally different from publishing books. The prize of a book is much higher than its printing cost. Therefore, the managers of a book company crack their mind to advertise their books.
It was really a benefiting lecture.

Last night I attended a lecture called "The Power of Culture" and then wrote something at lang-8. Now I continue to write something about this lecture.
The lecturer was the vice director of the opening ceremony of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. He is very satisfied and proud of works on this ceremony.
He told about a little story about the five Olympic ring. At first, he had beat his brain out to find how to present the five Olympic ring. But he had not found a perfect design. One day he drew a five Olympic ring on a brand-new white board. He gazed at it for a minute and still felt dissatisfied. When he tried to remove the five Olympic ring, he found the eraser did not work. As the white board had never been used before, there was a plastic film on its surface. The five Olympic ring was drawn on this cover film. While he was removing the plastic film, a great idea flashed into his mind. He immediately decided to design a film of five Olympic ring. That is what you see in the above picture.
I just attended a lecture called "The Power of Culture". The lecturer is Jigang Zhang, a famous director. It was seven years ago that I first heard of him. In the Spring Festival Gala Evening of 2005, there was a great dancing called thousand-hand Kwan-yin.
As shown in the above pictures, a few people with the same dress stand in line. They are all dressed up glitteringly. If one looks from the front, there is only one woman with many hands around her. It is why this dancing is called thousand-hand Kwan-yin. When all these hands move up and down following melody, the scene is too beautiful to be true.
Beyond my imagination, all these dancers are handicapped. They are all deaf-mute. It is hard to believe that deaf-mute people can perform so beautiful dance. I was deeply touched by their spirit immediately. From then on, these dancer and the director became known to every household. And then this team frequently go abroad for performance.
Best wishes for these beautiful dancers.

啊色 : Replacing an Electric Meter (0)

This afternoon I finally replaced the old electric meter with a new one.
The old electric meter was bought two years ago as a matching equipment of air conditioning. Four students lives in one house, which is composed of four bedrooms and one living room. With the help of a private electric meter for each air conditioning, we can share the electricity costs in proportion to one's electric consumption. Otherwise, much trouble will occur.
My electric meter worked well until last month. At first, it occasionally buzzed by day. This noise had little impact on me. However, it recently buzzed at night as well. The buzzing at night annoyed me much and hindered me from fast sleeping. As an electric meter, it can still record the electricity consumption. However, I could not bear the noise any more.
Consequently, I called the property service center and asked them to replace my electric meter as soon as possible. Half an hour later, an electrician came to my dormitory and installed a new electric meter. Now every thing returns to silence and in turn I eventually can have a sound sleep tonight.

Today is May 1st, International Labour Day. It is a legal holiday of China. Therefore all the students in China do not go to school. As a result, all the teachers can have nice rest as well.
However, not all the people enjoy the holiday. A great many people have to work harder than usual. Salesmen have to serve much more customers. Traffic policemen have to deal with more traffic jams and accidents. According to the Chinese law, people working in legal holidays can obtain double pay. Therefore, many factories are still full of works, who are willing to sacrifice their holidays for double pay. For them, at least at present, money is more valuable than time.
Even GOOGLE want to take part in this holiday. When I open its homepage, I see the above figure. A man dressed up as a worker lifts the logo of Google. He dresses in a blue overall baring his arms. A yellow helmet is on his head. There is a toolbox beside him. Judging from his dressing, he must do heavy manual work.
Today is ending. Good night:)

啊色 : The Rate of Domestic Direct Dial (5)

For ordinary Chinese people, the rate of domestic direct dial is 0.6 yuan per minute. If I had a ten minutes long-distance call, it will cost me 6 yuan. It's very high for me as a dinner in the mess hall only costs 7 yuan.
Fortunately for students lived in dormitory, there is a special service called "201 telephone", which only costs 0.08 yuan per minutes. The rate of "201 telephone" is about only one tenth of that of the ordinary long-distance call.
Every advantage has its disadvantages. I have to input a long string of account and secrete number before calling. Once there was no money left in my account, I could not make a call anymore.
This unfortunate condition happened last night. I was having a pleasant calling to my friend without realizing that I was running out of the money. Suddenly I heard a woman's voice from the telepone:"There's only one minute left". Consequently, I reluctantly hung up.

The last time I had my hair cut was March 3rd. It was almost two month ago. My hair grew fast in this period. It was so long than I could not bear it anymore.
Therefore, I decided to have it cut yesterday noon. At the same time, a problem occurred. Where could I find a cheap and good barbershop?
The barbershop I used to visit was suspended two and half months ago. Since then I was nervous every time I thought of haircut. This time was no exception.
There were three options for me. The nearest barbershop is just across the back gate of the university. It is the most convenient one as I can get there by walking. However it is the most expensive one, 10 yuan.
There is another one where I have to get by bike in 10 minutes. The price of this barbershop is 8 yuan. The cheapest one is in another campus with the price of 6 yuan.
In the end I went to the cheapest barbershop by bike.

啊色 : Seeing Like a State (0)

I spent three days reading a book called "Seeing Like a State--How Certain schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed".
The book written by James C. Scott was published in 1998 by the Yale University Press and then was translated into Chinese in 2004.
In the beginning the author gave a detailed description of a plantation forest. The same size trees are planted in line according to the plan of men. Therefore, the scene of the plantation forests is very agreeable to the eyes. However, the plantation forest is very apt to diseases and become weaker and weaker.
Forest is a very complicated ecological system. Various kinds of interactions exist between different plants. Plantation forests have only few kinds of plants and in turn lose biodiversity.
Similar with plantation forests, the government is always trying to program everything for people. The government prefers a simple and clear society, which is easy to be controlled. However, the government's efforts eventually fail as the society diversity is the key role in maintaining society stability.

啊色 : I Lost Smart Card (0)

I lost my campus card yesterday noon.
Yesterday I went to a mess hall to have lunch. After I chose dishes, I could not find my smart card. I suddenly became awkward. Fortunately, the salesperson of the mess hall let me take those dishes away without paying.
To make things even worse, I could not come into my dormitory without the card.
Therefore, I went to the Logistic Affairs Department to report the loss of my card and then make up a new card with the cost of 20 yuan. I repaid the lunch when I had supper.
I have been in the University for almost two years. This was the first time I lost my card.
Last year, I picked up a campus card on the road. I suddenly posted a message on the BBS. The owner of the card found me two hours later. As thanks, she bought a bottle of drink to me. I still vividly remember her pleasure expression when she get back her campus card from my hands. Unfortunately, I have not found my card up to now.

啊色 : The Art of Loving (1)

I spent the whole day reading the book: The Art of Loving.
The author of the book was Erich Fromm, who was an American psychologist and philosopher. He wrote the book at 1955, almost sixty year ago.
In this book, Fromm discussed various kinds of love: brotherly love, motherly love, erotic love ,self love and love of God. He believed that human was not born with the ability of loving. According to his theory, we have to make great effort to study what is love and to learn how to love. If we thought it was extremely easy to obtain loving, we are approaching the end of loving. In other words, if we wanted to have an everlasting love, we must make as much effort as we can to learn and practice loving.
On one hand, his conclusion was negative as we could lose loving one day if we are careless. On the other hand, it is positive as we could improve and extend our loving through our efforts.

I heard a story of Salome for the first time on the class the night before last.
Our teacher abstractly discussed different kinds of love and then gave us a concrete example of Salome. Her experience attracted me deeply. So, after the class, I found more information of Salome on the internet.
Salome was a Russian and born over one hundred and fifty years ago. In her life, three famous men loved her in turn. The first man was Nietzsche. He is well-known as a philosopher. He fell in love with her for the first sight. Unfortunately, she refused him. But he continued to love her despite her refusal.
The second was poet Lierke. She married him although she was fifteen years older than him. He was nobody when he made her acquaintance. With the help of Salome, he became a great poet in the end.
The last man is Freud. He was a psychologist. His theory have been influencing the world widely despite that a great many people have been criticizing him. When Salome was fifty years old, she met Freud and worked as his assistance. Similar with the previous two men, Freud loved her.
The men controls the world and the women controls the men and in turn the world. In this sense, Salome have great impact on the world.

啊色 : Rumor about Mendeleev (1)

This afternoon, I attended a lecture talking about the superheavy atoms. I heard a interesting stories about Mendeleev, the discoverer of the Elements Period Table.
At the beginning, the lecturer ask us why Mendeleev was not awarded the the Nobel prize. I was totally innocent of his question. Although I am very familiar with the Elements Period Table, I has never thought this question before.
His question grabbed me immediately and then I listened attentively to his speech. After a brief introduction to the history of the Elements Period Table, the lecturer unhurriedly told us the story. The Elements Period Table is a very important discovery made by Mendeleev. After finding it in 1869, he once talked about it in his class. However, the president took his theory as nonsense and scold him. Fortunately, his prediction was confirmed before long. Therefore, Mendeleev was regarded as the discoverer of the Elements Period Table. By rights he should be awarded the Nobel prize for his marvelous discovery. Unfortunately, he was on bed terms with a Swiss chemist, who happened to be in the committee of the Nobel Prize. Therefore, the Nobel Prize was never awarded to him.

The former captain of our climbing team got married two weeks ago.
He is a Ph.D student majoring in macromolecule. In order to celebrate his marriage, he and his wife invited all members of our climbing team to have a dinner last night.
We arrived at a good restaurant before 5:00 PM. As some friends lived far away from the restaurant, only six attended the dinner. We first proposed a toast to the couple. Then we began to ask them questions. We were very interested in their experience of love. His wife told us that she made his acquaintance at a party almost two years ago. Before long they got familiar with other. One year later after they met each other for the first time, they became lovers. Another half a year passed before he proposed to her.
We left the restaurant after 7:00 PM. Best wishes to them!
