Harriet : For those taking the TOEIC Test! I have devised something to help (hopefully)!! (0)

Please click on the link and follow, http://www.toeic.or.jp/toeic/about/tests/sample01.html

Listening-

Part 1 -

Pick out key information, i.e. the doing word, the verb. For example,
A) They're leaving the room. The verb is leaving, listen for the verb and pick the most sensible picture that goes with it
B) They're turning on the machine. The verb is turning on, listen for it and pick the most sensible picture.
C) They're standing near the table. The verb is standing, pick the picture that seems most sensible.
D) They're reading the newspaper. The verb is reading, pick the picture with somebody reading.

Or

Pick out the object, noun, in the sentence.
A) They're leaving the room. The noun in the sentence is room. Is one of the pictures a room?
B) They're turning on a machine. The noun is machine. Is there a radio or T.V (etc) in the picture?
c) They're standing near the table. The noun is table, is there a table picture?
D) They're reading the newspaper. The noun is newspaper, is there a news paper?

However, the second option may not be good just on its own. For example, there may be a T.V. in one or two (or more) pictures, so be careful! If you can pick out the verb and noun, then you will be doing great! If you can't pick out both, then don't worry, try to pick out the verb!

Part 2 -

Where is the meeting room?
A) To meet the new director.
B) It's the first room on the right.
C) Yes, at 2 o'clock.

For this question, you will be asked a question!
In English, a question will start off with either a:
Who?
What?
When?
Where?
Why?
For this question, 'where' is used. The person is asking for directions for an object, person or place.
He asks 'where is the meeting room', the correct answer will be 'B) It's the first room on the right' because the statement is giving you a direction, similar to 'over there', 'near here', 'the cat is asleep underneath the table' (etc).

If the question was:
Why are we going to the meeting room?
The answer would be 'A) To meet the new director' because the person is giving an answer to why they are going!
If the question was:
Are we going to the meeting at 2 o'clock?
The answer would be 'Yes, at 2 o'clock' because the person asking the question is asking when and if he had the right time!

Part 3 -

Man: "Hello, I ordered a desk from your catalogue at the end of the month and I haven't received it yet. Could you look into it for me please?"
Woman: "Certainly, sir. Do you have your order number by any chance?"
Man: "Yes, it's 4816490."
Woman: "You're Mr.Donaldson, right? Well according to my records, it left our warehouse on monday, that was the fifth of May. So it should be delivered to you tomorrow."

44) Why did the man telephone the woman?
The answer would be 'to check on his order' because he states that he 'ordered a desk' and he hadn't 'received it yet.'

45) What is the man waiting to receive?
The answer would be 'a desk' because he 'ordered a desk' from the 'catalogue'.

46) What does the woman ask for?
The answer would be 'she asks for his order number'. We can tell because she asks 'do you have your order number by any chance?'

Part 4 -

Announcer: "Attention Trans-Air passengers. Due to unusually strong storms, flights from Hong Kong have been delayed. In addition, flights to or through Hong Kong will be unable to take off until the weather system clears. Please accept our apologies for any inconveniences this may cause you. If there is any way we can make your wait more comfortable, please let the agent know. In the meantime we are pleased to offer all passengers a continental breakfast in the waiting area. The food will be available all morning. Please help yourself to coffees or teas or pastries or fruit. We will announce new flight schedules as they become available. For now, please try to relax and be patient. Thank you and have a good morning."

71) Where is this announcement being made?
From listening, we can deduce that the announcement is being made in an airport as the announcer uses terms like 'passengers', 'flights' and 'take off'. The answer should be 'At an airport.'

72) What is the weather like in Hong Kong?
The answer should be 'It is stormy' because from the passage we know that there are 'unusually strong storms'.

73) What time of day is this announcement being made?
From the passage, when the announcer says 'have a good morning', we know that the announcement is taking place in the morning. The answer should be 'In the morning'.

With part 3 and 4, they won't ask you to write lots down, the questions and answers will also be simple. So don't panic if the passage is long, like this one, the answers will either be near the beginning or the end! (Hopefully *^^*)

Reading -

Part 1 (5) -

-------- is no better season than winter to begin training at Silver's Fitness Center.
（A）When
（B）It
（C）There
（D）As it

Read through the text first, then try it with different answers. 'When' is a question, there should be a question mark at the end, therefore it is not 'A'. 'It' is used to simplify something, for example 'It is mine!' That 'it' is a simplified version of saying what the object/noun is!
'D' would mean that 'if something happens, something else happens', for example, 'As it is Winter, the weather becomes cold'. 'D' would not fit in with this sentence, meaning that 'C' is the answer!
'C' is the answer because the person saying it is proclaiming it! "THERE IS NO BETTER SEASON THAN WINTER TO BEGIN TRAINING AT SILVER'S FITNESS CENTER!!!!!!!!!" ^^!!

Part 2 (6) -

(Picture)

141) The answer is 'A) Pleased', use the past tense, because he is pleased to inform!

142) The answer is 'A) Follow', you need to follow the rules!

143) The answer is 'C) according to'

144) The answer is 'C) eligible', eligible means 'worthy'. You are not eligible - you are not worthy! (Ahahaha, sounds so mean!)

I hope this my explanation for this part helped, if you still don't fully understand or need more explanation, please ask!

Part 3 (7) -

(picture)

Read through the leaflet, every last bit of detail, even the small print! ^^!!

What is the purpose of this advertisement?
（A）To announce a change in business hours
（B）To advertise a business for sale
（C）To encourage diners to eat early
（D）To attract more customers

The leaflet shows discounted price or offers, this can be used to attract customers! The answer is 'C'

What will customers receive if they spend more than $10?
（A）A $2 discount on their bill
（B）50% off their next purchase
（C）A liter of soda
（D）Free delivery service

Read the offers, search for $10, which is the right coupon?
The answer is 'A'

What will happen on June 16?
（A）A new owner will take over the business.
（B）The coupons will expire.
（C）Prices will be further reduced.
（D）The business will close.

The information is in the text! Look for 'June 16' as the question is asking what will happen on that date.
The answer to this question is 'B'

I hope this helps!

As this tests asks a lot of questions, you need to know how to interpret them, understand them and answer them. If you need any more help on questions, please ask! I'll create something for you! :)

Harriet : War - Listening! (3)

http://soundcloud.com/harriet-flight/war

This is a poem I created (now uploaded onto soundcloud. As the name suggests, it's about war!

Bang. The field destroyed by explosion.
Animals dead and the environment destroyed. Corrosion,
Of hearts, minds and souls,
Craters left and holes.

Cries of pain fill the air. Blood,
It’s shed in the next neighbourhood.
Humanity sits and watches
Men returning, hands in crutches.
They sit and stare
Not one moment with care.
War, it's never over.

Arrogance is bliss,
And the cat's hiss,
Isn’t as dangerous as its bite.
But the silence of the night,
It’s broken.

Broken, like the corrupted laughs of witches,
Cackling, looking over the hitches,
In their master plan.
And, as soon as they can,
Their master plan will be put into action,
Creating a chain reaction,
Of murder and guilt,
Until all of the flowers wilt.

Hope you like it~

Harriet : For people who want to practice English reading. Read my essay on "Epiphany" (6)

Epiphany

Epiphany—A sudden realisation of great significance.
If somebody has never had an epiphany before, how does one know what it feels like to have an epiphany? How does one know if they’ve had an epiphany?

The idea of an epiphany just came to me. Nothing of what I was doing could have possible lead for me to think of it. Like most things, it’s just subconsciously.
Confused, I couldn’t think of any reasonable answer to the questions I asked myself. What does an epiphany feel like? How does somebody know if they have had an epiphany before?
I felt frustrated with myself, not being able to find an answer, within myself, to answer the questions. I then thought to ask for a different opinion and with the person I was talking to at the time, I asked them the questions. It was difficult to put my feelings/thoughts into words, I’ve always found it difficult and to put something I didn’t fully understand into words was unbelievably hard!

I asked her the same questions I asked myself. She answered with what I already knew, “A sudden realisation”. It continued to baffle both my friend and myself. She didn’t understand how it would feel like but instead suggested how it could have felt like. “Trying to remember something that’s taking a long time to recall and then suddenly it comes back to you. In other words like a “wooooaaaahh” moment!
Still I was unable to process the thought and the answer still left me with questions.

At the time, I was also talking to my older sister and thought she might be able to shed some light at the subject. I messaged my questions to her. She replied, “Usually, someone has an epiphany in a time of deep thought and questioning, many people don't realise they've had one, but it usually means something deeper than just a simple idea "Oh, I’ll change my hair today" It’s more for the questions "Who am I? Really...” It’s a sudden realisation of great significance. It also goes as a reaction, once you've had an epiphany, people usually feel contented or more comfortable.” It then clicked, I’m not sure what did but something inside of me agreed with what she had said. Maybe an understanding? I felt a lot “lighter” after that.
I reached a conclusion that I will never know fully in till I believe I have had one. This then led me to my next question.

How could the idea of “epiphany” be shown in art form? Could it be portrayed as somebody having an epiphany?
My sister studies “Concept design and Animation” at university, It only seemed reasonable to ask her. Again her answer seemed to be reasonable. “Probably, would have to be quiet abstract. You can’t have an exact picture of an idea, because everyone has their own interpretive and no one knows what an idea looks like, it would have to be a picture with a lot of movement and obvious brush strokes, so people can see the emotion, a certain colour palate would have to be used too. You should look at Van Gogh for movement, and Kandinsky for abstract.” So I did. It made sense, using certain colours and brush stroked would emphasize somebody’s perspective on a piece of art, the name giving the viewer a clue about what the piece is trying to describe.

In conclusion, nobody will ever know what an epiphany feels like or if they have had one in till afterwards. Epiphany’s can be quite trivial on the outside but their meaning is so much more. Maybe the only way you could produce a form of art portraying “epiphany” is to produce it in abstract or contemporary form because no one how it should be portrayed. Everybody has their own opinion about epiphany.

If you have any questions, please ask! I'd be willing to answer :)

Harriet : Kanji resources (3)

... Kanji.
Wish there wasn't so many! Starting to think that I shouldn't have started to learn Japanese :o

NO!!!!! NO DON'T THINK LIKE THAT!!

Well anyway, I was wondering, if people (preferably Japanese people who had to learn Kanji when they were young) to list the resources they had used.
It would be great! It's hard to find any decent resources to learn Kanji without paying too much. And, being that i live in the place I do, it's hard to find people who have actually learnt them growing up or learnt them from studying.

Maybe a bit about me~

Words and I don't mix. I can't picture the kanji if I am looking at an English word. So if I could associate that kanji with a picture and the associate the picture with an english word it might be better.

Also, flashcards = NO GO AREA! No, seriously guys. I've already tried using flash cards. For me, it didn't work.

Well please get back to me~

P.S. I take back what I said before. Anybody can comment! I just need help :)

Thanks in advance~

Harriet

Harriet : It's nice isn't it? (0)

Learning about other people's way of life is always a big topic. People can learn so much from other people, it's really unbelievable! It sure does show ranges of behavior in different groups of cultures, doesn't it?

It also makes me sad. Looking at how other people live so much better than other people. Not entirely poverty. But manners should never go amiss! That's one thing i hate about England. Most people here are nice, or should i say decent? And well the others... That's a whole different topic, that if i start i'll get angry.

What do you think about other people's culture?

Please tell me if i have used the wrong kanji or if my sentences are strange (you wouldn't normally use them)/you can simplify them etc.
I know practice makes perfect and maybe simplifying long sentences isn't the way to go.
