When I was young, we children often went to fishing. At that time, no matter how many fish I got, I could sit beside the pond a whole day. The elders would say, "this kid was very patient to sit for a long time. He should have a bright future." In my memories, during my whole childhood I had caught a lot of fishes, while I had seldom caught big ones. I thought I might just don't have enough strength, or I completely didn't long for the big fishes at that time.
Well, many years had passed ever since, but I was still not good at catching big fishes. Sometimes, I used too much strength so the fish line broke, while sometimes I used too little strength and the fish escaped easily.

You'd have to use present tense unless something happens after this - since this is the end of your story, you'd either write it in present tense or put in an explanation to say you've either improved at fishing or you don't fish any more.
