I think they have excrptions to the rule, but I want to know a basik rule.
You can see the following explaine. It's my understanding. Is it right?
"it" using thing
"that" using thing also, but it's far from us and we don't hold it.
we use "it" as pronoun.
that ==used to indicate a person, thing, idea, state, event, time as pointed out or present, mentioned before
it == used to represent a person, thing, animal understood, previously mentioned, or about to be mentioned whose gender is unknown

I think there are exceptions to the rule, but I want to know the basic rule.

"that" is also used for things, but they are far from us and we can't hold them.
That is my mother.
(Gramatically it is like "My mother is that." This is important. My mother = subject. That = object.)
That is what I am thinking. ("What I am thinking is that.")
That is amazing! (This is more of an expression so it doesn't make sense to change the word order.)
That can also be "This" if the object is almost touchable or closeby. If you use "That instead of "This" you will still be correct, though.
