astro_yoshi : Sod's law (1)

I'm a private pilot in the US and Japan. I am also a student pilot in the UK. I have to pass written tests and a flight test to transfer my pilot license from the US to the UK. I had had flight training since last year and passed all written tests, flight check, and a mock test by last month. Although I booked final flight test a month ago, bad weather prevented me to having it. The test was cancelled seven times due to weather. Today a member of the flight school sent me a mail and she said that my flight instructor resigned and there were no record of my skill. She said that I have to have training and skill check by other instructor again before taking final test. It meant that I had to go back a few stages of training. It is ridiculous. It's not my fault.
"Here you go again." I thought it when I received her mail. I had had similar problem many times in my life. The world must be filled with malevolence.
Although I'm still angry, I know it's a wasting of time. I'll plot my next move soon.

astro_yoshi : Recruiting participants (6)

I'm a neuroscientist in a university in London. I need healthy volunteers as participants for our study. I'm measuring brain activities by using medical equipments. I perform my experiments on weekdays because I need some helps of the staff in the laboratory and they work only weekday. So, most of my participants are university students. Recently, it is no easy to recruit participants because the summer vacation has started. Many students go back their home towns and the campus looks bare. Normally, I perform my experiment with participants who are introduced by other researchers. It is much safer way. Although there are some volunteer pool systems on the web, they are slightly risky. I had used them and I had some troubles. Such kind of troubles is stressful even in Japan, it is much worse in foreign country in English. They were hard for me. So, I do not want to use those pools. However I cannot help use them because summer vacation has started. I hope no serious problem happens.

astro_yoshi : English PC (0)

I moved to London last year for my job.
I brought a PC which was installed windows for Japanese.
Unfortunately, it crashed and I had to buy new one.
Although it is not impossible to buy Japanese one in the UK, it was not affordable for me.
I bought new cheap one which was installed windows for English.
Of course, we can use Japaneses on it; read and write. However some software makes character corruption.
The iTunes did not deal with Japanese song name correctly. The video studio did not load video files correctly.
After coming to the UK, I did not use Japanese file name. Then it was ok. However, my old files sometimes use Japanese as a file name or directory name.
I was confused. Then I looked for solutions on the web and I found it; it said that I have to change "system allocation" setting from English to Japanese.
I tried and all problems were straightened out. I did not look them.

astro_yoshi : Radio communications (4)

One of the difficulty to get a pilot certification is to get a skill for radio communication. We establish radio communications with controllers or someone at an aerodrome during flying in an airplane. There are many things to do during take off and landing. In addition, we operate radio during them in English. I got my first pilot certification in the USA. So I struggled with it through out my training in the United States. After that, I transferred my certification from the US to Japan. Of course, we communicate in English even in Japan. But we are not native speakers both pilots and controller and controller knows I'm poor at English. So it is much easier than in the United States. And the procedures are not much different between the US and Japan. Now, I'm student pilot in the UK. I have to communicate with native controllers in English. In addition, communication procedure are slightly different between the US and the UK. I sometimes be confused by the differences. I thought that I had to improve my communication skills. It is not enough to do during flight training. Most student pilots learn radio skills on the ground to watch someone's communications by receivers. Of course, I did it in the US. I thought I should do it again in the UK. I went to Cambridge airport by train with my receiver today. I found a pub beside o the runway and get into it. I watch someone's communication by the receiver over lunch. I saw airplanes flying around the airport and watch their communications simultaneously. It was educative for me. I found some phrases which I did not watch during my flight. Furthermore, this training is free and safe! It was very good. I should do it again.

astro_yoshi : Change my booking by phone (6)

It was windy day. I had a booking for my flight training today, but it seemed impossible to fly. The wind speed was 30 knot at surface and 40 knot at 2000 ft. I wanted to confirm wether my flight training would be cancelled, I send a email to a flight club. Of course, although
phone was better for it, I'm poor at talking on a phone in English. But I did not get any replies by the time for leaving my flat for the aerodrome. I could not help phoning to confirm it. Someone on the phone said that all flight scheduled on today would be canceled. I booked special training today, then I asked him to move the booking to another day. He asked when I want to have it then I asked him to book it on the next Saturday. He asked me which airplane I want to use. I asked him which ones will be available on the day. He showed the registration numbers of them to be free and I chose one of them, which I often used. It seemed that the rearrangement was performed correctly, but I did I not confirm I said my intentions correctly. Then I sent a mail to confirm that the change was done correctly. He replied that it was ok. It is still hard job to talk on a phone.

astro_yoshi : Diamond Jubilee (9)

This weekend was four days weekend; named jubilee weekend. I sometimes heard the word "jubilee" and it was also used for the name of a tube line, "jubilee line", but I did not know the meaning. I asked my colleague about the meaning and he said that it represents a kind of celebration and it means that the celebration in commemoration of 60 years of the Queen. We can find many Union Jack all around the cities and TVs continually broadcasted the special programs for celebrations. A TV program showed the events of Jubilee in other countries; Kenya, South Africa, India, and etc. I realised that British Empire was large area and included many counties. Although it is curious for us Japanese that European people (at least for British) does not tell Africa and Asia apart, I may find the reason for it. They had colonies all over the world, outside of Europa. Their world may be composed of two parts; European countries and outside of them. If their cultures based on such histories, it may be understandable. The Jubilee gave me good chance to understand their culture and histories.

astro_yoshi : Summer has come in London (2)

Short summer has come suddenly. Although it was cool in the morning of the day before yesterday, it was getting hot after noon of the day. The temperature was getting higher than 20 degrees Celsius. It was also hot yesterday and today. The August is hottest month in Japan, but I heard that May, June, and July may be hotter than August in the UK. Nevertheless, it was cool in this May. I was afraid that we will not have summer this year. Fourtunetly, my expectation was wrong. Summer has come. Many people enjoy themselves in the garden during lunch time. It is beautiful season.

astro_yoshi : A Japanese aerobatics pilot (1)

I went a flight school for my training as usual and I found a Japanese pilot there by chance. This was my first time to see Japanese there. He said that he came here to have lessons for aerobatics to prepare for the world aerobatics competition. He said that there were good airplanes and easier to rent than other flight clubs. Although I was interested in aerobatics, I had few chances to be rerated to aerobatics. I heard many interesting stories about it. It was fun.

astro_yoshi : London marathon (6)

My friends from Japan stayed my flat for a week. Although they were interested in the London marathon, they did not know when it would be held. I checked it on the web and found that it would be held on the Sunday when they stayed in London by chance. So we changed our plan on Sunday to see it.
One of my friends had not seen Big ben, yet. Then, we decided to go Westminster Bridge, which was located just beside of the Big ben, to see the marathon. We got up early to enjoy sightseeing before enjoying marathon. We got off a tube at Leister square station and walked to Westminster Bridge. When we passed in front of St Martin's in the Fields, we heard hymns by chance. It was a time to start a service. The hymns with sounds of a pipe organ were so sublime. After enjoying the sounds, we went to Westminster Bridge through Trafalgar square and Admiralty Arch. We took photos in front of them and Big ben, we moved beside of the course of the marathon. It was not busy yet, because it was so early to see the marathon there; it was 9 p.m. when is the stating time of the marathon. We got a good position which was located at the corner of the course just behind TV crews and professional photographers. When the first runner came, there were dense crowd of people behind us. We got a best position to see it and we could see the runners who were far from us, they run to just in front of us and turned to left before the nose of us.
The game was impressive. Many runners run and many many peoples cheered along the course. It was not a mere sports event, but a kind of a festival. We were lucky to have an oppotunity to enjoy such festival.

astro_yoshi : World standard (1)

I got a private pilot certification in the US and transferred it to Japanese one. Basically, the aviation law in Japan is similar to one in the US. So it was not difficult to pass the exam to transfer it. Now, I moved to the UK and I'm studying aviation laws in the UK to transfer my certification to one in the UK. Before starting my study, I did not expect that it was so hard. The US, the UK, and Japan are members of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), so I thought that the laws must be almost same between three countries. But it was wrong. There were many discrepancy between the US and the UK. I was confused. Although I thought that the US was the world standard, it seemed wrong. The aviation law in the UK is based on the rules of ICAO. But the law in the US has many unique rules. In that meaning, the law in the UK is more world standard.
After finishing world war II, Japan have recovered from the devastation by instructions of the US. Then we Japanese have been affected by the US so much and tend to deal with it as world standard. I moved to the UK and found that the US is not always standard. I got my job in the UK by chance. It was a good opportunity to make me know the largeness and diversity of the world.

astro_yoshi : Analog TV　broadcasting was terminated in London (5)

One day, I turned on my TV and found that it did not work well. I could not watch any TV programs, I could see only noise. What did happen? I reminded that the analog TV broadcasting in London would be terminated in this year. But I did not know when it stopped. My TV set could not receive digital broadcastings. I realized that analog TV broadcasting was terminated that day. I asked my colleague what I should do. He recommended me to buy an equipment which convert digital signals to analog signals. He said I could use the TV set with the equipment, which was named digi-box or free view box. I went to an electronics retail store to look for one. I found ones and bought a cheapest one. It cost about 30 pounds. I attached it on my TV set and it worked well. I could see TV programs. When I saw analog TV broadcastings, I could watch only four channels. But I can watch more than ten channels after attaching the equipment. Although it cost 30 pounds, I think that it worth using.

My friends from Japan stayed my flat for a week. They wantede to enjoy walking in country side. I asked my colleague, who loves walking, where we should go. He gave me a map for walking; it showed a walking course in the northern London. He said that the course was suitable for beginner to enjoy walking in the UK.
Saturday morning, we went to the starting point of the course by tubes. The course went through the small forest. Some families enjoyed walking with their dogs. We strolled through the forest with their dogs. The sights were so beautiful and we enjoyed one of the British cultures.
After the walking, I took them to a tea room. There was an important British culture which I wanted to introduce them. It was "Cream tea". There was a good tea room near my flat. They served delicious cream tea. Cream tea is a set of the foods which is composed of scones, clotted cream, jam, and a cup of tea. Not all tea room serve both delicious scones and tea. But the tea room serves good ones. Of course, they did not know it and this was their first time to enjoy cream teas. They were surprised because it was so delicious. I was happy that they enjoyed some part of British cultures.

astro_yoshi : See a musical with my friends. (17)

After finishing my job on Friday, I went to Victoria station to meet my friends from Japan. They requested me to arrange to see a musical. Although I heard that it was not easy to enjoy them in Japan because it was difficult to get a ticket and it was so expensive. But it is not difficult to enjoy them in Lindon. There are many theater to enjoy musicals in central London. I was not interspersed in them, I did not know which musical we should see. Then I consulted to my colleague who was good at musicals. He suggested that there were two good musicals which were not held in Japan and we should see one of them. He explained stories of them and I decided one to see; Belly Elliot. One of my friends learned ballets, I thought that it must fit for them. The musical was held in the theater which was located in Victoria. Then, we meet eachh other at there. We received our tickets which I booked before on the website at the ticket office. There were some different levels of seats and prices were different. We bought tickets for good seats because it was a good chance to enjoy REAL musical. It started at half passed seven, lasted almost three hours. It was composed two blocks and there was an interval between them. To tell the truth, it was too difficult to understand their English. But I think that I understood the abstract of the story; it was so impressive. It was thought-providing. Although I was not interested in musicals, it made me changed. I have to say thank you to my friends to give me a chance to have this opportunity.

A new aviation chart was published in the UK. It is composed two seats; one is normal one and the other is specialized for the Olympic season. A large flight restricted zone was established around London in the latter chart. It includes my home aerodrome then my flight will be restricted during the Olympic games. I felt that the season was getting close.

The last night in the Netherland, I had dinner at the restaurant next to the B and B I visited. A waiter showed me a menu and said please told him if I wanted to be explained it in English because it w written in Netherlandish. I asked him which is the most Netherlandish foods. He pointed one name which was listed on the top of the menu. He explained as follows; it was a dish made of chicken with peanut source; fried potato would be added as a side dish. I thought that it might be similar to a kind of roast chicken. I ordered it because he said it was Netherlandish food, although I did not want to eat a roast chicken because I ate it two days before. Fifteen minutes later, the dish was served. It was not a roast chicken, but a food liked a "Yakitori", which was one if the traditional Japanese foods. But there was a big difference; we Japanese don't use peanuts source for Yakitori. It was delicious! The source tasted not only peanuts but also some spices. It was so delicious that I asked the waiter the name of the dish; it's name was "Gemarineercle nip sale". The fried potato, which was a side dish, was served with mayonnaise. I saw sometimes people who was eating fried potato with mayonnaise in the Netherlands. We Japanese don't eat it in such way, then I was surprised. But it tasted good. The mayonnaise tasted milder than Japanese one. There are two major mayonnaise in Japan; Q.P. and Ajinomoto. The former one is major and has stronger taste than latter. But the mayonnaise in the Netherlands was much more milder than Ajinomoto. It was an interesting experience.
Next morning, I found a peanuts source on the table when I had breakfast. I asked a owner of the B and B whether the peanuts source was common among people in the Netherlands. He answered that's right; they had colony in Indonesia and they have important relationships between China. The culture of using peanuts came from such Asian countries. Now, many Asians people live in the Netherlands and Chinese foods were much popular in the country, he explained. I reminded that I learned such stories when I was a high school student. I confirmed that the knowledge which we learn in schools were important.
I stayed the B and B near the Rotterdam to go Kinderdijk. Kinderdijk is famous for its many windmills; it was registered as a World Heritage Site. I rend a bike at the B and B and went there by it. Kinderdijk was located the conjunction of two large canal and there were many small canals around there. These canals looked important to correct water from those damp lands and windmills pumped water up to the sea. The sights remained me the lymph system or azygos vein system in our body. These system correct tissue fluid in the body and pump into blood circulation system. (I'm a medical doctor). Those damp lands were just like body tissue and canals were lymph vessels or veins. I thought their functions were quite similar. Then water pump (or windmills) might corresponded to left venous angle.
At first, I visited a windmill which was open for visitors. There was a thick axis rotating by the wind. The wind was so strong that day, the rotating speed was so fast. I found an interesting thing that the horizontal axis which supports the fin was not parallel to the grand. The axis was slightly upward faces to the wind. I wonder why it was inclined in such a way. I thought that it was good to avert too strong wind force to upward to protect the structure of the windmill. I thought that windmills were well designed.
Next, I visited a windmill museum to see a movie which showed me a history of the area and windmills. The explanation was good to understand them.
After that, I visited a cafe to have lunch. I ate a pancake. I sometimes eat Dutch style pancakes in London. It is unique and delicious. I love it. But I did not know the real one in the Netherlands. It looked same as one which I ate in London. The taste was slightly milder than one in London. It tasted good!
After eating a pancake, I enjoyed biking around the area. Although the landscape was similar to one in the country side of the UK, there was an important difference; there were so many channels all over the area. The sight was so beutiful. Unfortunately, the weather changed and rain was getting hard. I had to terminate the biking and I went back to the B and B.

The third day in the Netherlands, I went to Keukenhof to enjoy beautiful sights. Although the weather forecast said that it would rain, I saw a clear sky without any clouds when I got up. I wanted to visit some museums in Amsterdam before leaving for Keukenhof, I decided to skip them and went to Keukenhof as early as I could, because I thought that the weather might be unstable and I should get there before the weather changs. I went Amsterdam central station and got on a train to Schiphol airport station to leave my baggage. And then, I got on a bus to the Keukenhof. It was still fine when I got there. So many colourful flowers covered the garden. I thought that it was worth while coming from abroad to see the beautiful garden even from Japan! (But it is impossible to leave Japan in spring for most Japanese because they had to work so hard especially in spring.). There were many cherry blossoms with full blooms; we Japanese love those flowers, then I was lucky! By chance, I found a bird show which was held in the garden. A owl, an eagle, and other birds showed their demonstration flights between flowers; it was absolutely beautiful! I joined a boat cruse which went though flower gardens. These colourful gardens looked as if it were colourful carpets. The blue sky enhanced their beauty. Just after the boat riding, clouds appeared and covered all over the sky. The sun light is important to see colourful sights. The situation was not good to enjoy the gardens. I thought that I was right to skip calling at museums in Amsterdam before coming Keukenhof. I have enjoyed myself so much. Then I left there for the B and B which I booked and was located near Rotterdam. Surprisingly, I took more than 500 photos in the day; because the garden was so beautiful.

On the second day, although the weather forecast predicted rain, I saw a sunrise between clouds at the hotel. I thought that it might be a chance to enjoy my trip to the Floriade, which is an international exhibition for flowers. I'm not good at flowers, I heard that it would be beautiful exhibition. Then I wanted to go to see there. It was held in Venlo, which is a city located in south west of the Netherlands. Amsterdam is located in the northern Netherlands, it is not so close each other. But I heard that it would take only about two hours by train. I thought that the fine day would not be continued, it might change. So I had quick break first and left my hotel for Amsterdam central station. I took a train to Eindhoven and change trains there to Venlo. Then I caught a bus to the place of exhibition. I arrived at there around 11 a.m. Fortunately, it was still fine. It was composed of four main areas and each area has its own concept. I strolled through one by one. The most interesting area for me was the education area. I ate some samples of vegetables and found that they were more delicious than as usual. There might be some reasons; they might so fresh, the breeds might be different, the cooking was different.... But the most different thing was that I ate it as a main dish, not as a side dish. I'm a neuroscientist and I know that an "attention" is a very important factor not only for cognition but also for perception. My attention to these vegetables made my taste perception system sensitive and I could detect faint taste which I normally neglect. This experience interested me to foods and cooking. It was interesting experience

The cloud base was low and Amsterdam was completely covered by thick clouds when I arrived at there. I wonder whether I would have fine day for a few days because I came here to enjoy photo shooting. The sun light is one of the most important factors to take photos. It can make everything beautiful. Even the most beautiful sight might not look so good under thick clouds. After arriving a hotel, I checked the weather forecast on the web. It predicted that the weather would not so good for a few days and latter day would be worse. I had two major destinations in this trip; Floriade 2012 and Keukenhof. I thought that I should go there in early period of the trip. Then, I decided to go Floriade on the second day and Keukenhof at the third day of my trip. I hope I would have fine days.

I'm leaving London for Amsterdam to enjoy sightseeing. I heard that many flowers cover the Netherlands in this season and it is so beautiful. I came Lindon in January last year. I lost my chance to enjoy it last year because I was not used to my life in London yet and i did not have any rooms in my heart. But now, I have been in London for more than a year and I have settled down in London. This spring may be my last chance to enjoy it, then I chose the Netherlands as a destination for my trip during the Easter holidays. I'll visit the Keukenhof garden. To tell the truth, I don't know botany well, although I have teacher's license for science in high school. I was majored at physics and medicine. But I love seeing beautiful sights, so I'll be able to enjoy it, I think.
This is my first visit in Netherlands. Although I'm looking forward to visiting in the country, I'm slightly nervous because it is not a English speaking country. In anyway, this airplane will land Schiphol soon. I want to enjoy myself a lot.

astro_yoshi : Seeing an opera after my job (2)

This morning, my boss said that he wold go to see an opera with his family tonight with smile and asked me whether I was interested in it. Although I knew nothing about it, I was interested in it because it was one of the European cultures. I was ashamed that I know nothing about operas; The only thing I knew was that opera was a kind of play and it was related to music. That's all. It is impossible to enjoy opera in Japan; The tickets are so expensive and it is difficult to get a ticket even you would pay much. Then I answered, yes. He said that I might get a cheap ticket, so he recommended me to come with him. I finished my job earlier than usual and I went to Royal Opera house in Covent Garden with him. All admires of opera in Japan must envy me. He arranged something for me to get a ticket and I got one. When I got in the Opera House and found that all people were dressed up. I was sorry about that I wore a casual wear because it was just after my job and I did not know I would come there when I left my flat in the morning. I walked through long corridors and found my seat; Surprisingly, it was for a seat in the front row at the upper floor (amphitheatre). I could see the stage without seeing anyone's back. The title of the opera was "Rigolett". Just after stating the play, I found that all lines in operas were songs. I did not know even such a thing. Their singing powers were sublime. I understood what is "sing a song". Of course, all songs were performed with an orchestra's performance. I thought that it must be one of the important styles of classical music. I should know it when I learn European culture. All lines were spoken in not English. Then, there was a big electrical sign board over the stage and the translations to English were displayed in real time. But it was very difficult for me to read and understand; it was very fast and the meaning of the word was difficult for me. If it had been in translations to Japanese, it would not be so easy to catch them up. But I thought I understood the outline of the story, may be..... Not only the contents of the opera but also the atmospheres of the opera house and audience were interesting for me. I had a good opportunity.

astro_yoshi : Power of photos (1)

My Japanese friend sent me a parcel, which enclosed a DVD disc. The disc recorded many photos which he took us during our trip when I temporally returned to Japan last month. I'm a private pilot in Japan and enjoyed a trip by a small airplane with him and other friends during my stay in Japan. Our small airplane stayed in a small airport in Okayama prefecture. We got together at there and flew to Nanki-shirahama via Kobe. Those photos reminded me the trip clearly. One of my hobbies is editing a video. I made a video work by those photos with a BGM. I enjoyed the trip with my friends again while I edited it. After five hours, I finished editing and sent it to my friends by internet. They also enjoyed the trip again. I reconfirmed that photos were powerful method to enjoy our lives.

astro_yoshi : Easter will come soon. (2)

My colleague gave me an egg shaped chocolate. I realized that the Easter will come soon. We can find many egg shape items in grossly store recently. The Easter is not well known among Japanese, although we often mimic many Western cultures; Christmas is popular and Hallowing is getting popular recently as commercial purposes. I had never known Easter since I came London last year. To tell the truth, I have to be ashamed that I don't know its original meaning of it. It may be important season for Christian. But for me, it is one of the important holidays; we have two holidays in a year: Easter and Christmas. Easter is not fixed on calendar day; it move every year around the early spring. It'll start in this week this year. It'll last about a week and I'll go abroad for sightseeing. I'm looking for to having it.

astro_yoshi : Busy tube in this morning. (0)

Although it takes only 30 minutes to come my office from my flat as usual, it took more than 45 minutes today. The tube, which I was on board, was stopped at some stations by red signal. Because it stopped at stations longer, much more people were getting on. It was so crowded in the carriage. It is well known that commuter trains are so crowded in Japan, but tubes in London are also crowded especially during commute time. We should avert the peak of the commuter time as much as we can.

It was fine Saturday. Although I did not have any plan, I wanted to go anywhere to enjoy UK life. Where should I go? I woke up late, then it was not to go so far. I saw a google map on the web to decide where to go. There was an interesting area beside of the Heathrow airport. There were many water area. I saw it from the airplane when I used Heathrow airport and I thought it might be a beutiful area. I did not have any information about it. I looked for a station in the area on google map. I found a station between lakes; the name was Wraybury. I visited the website "Transport for London" to find an information how to get there. I found that there was a train service from London Waterloo station. Then, I went to Waterloo station and got a train to go there. The farther the train run from waterloo, the more peaceful sights appeared. I saw sheep along the railway. After 45 minutes, I arrived at Wraybury station. It was a small station without any member of the train staff. It was located in the forest and there were no shops and houses. There was a large lake beside of the station and waterfowls lived in. It was beutiful. Although I have no information around there, I had an iPhone and could see a map around there. I found that there was a town in the south west of the station. Then, I stared to walk to there. The road went through a forest. I enjoyed the sights and sounds of birds while walking. After 15 minutes walk, I arrived at a town. I was hungry. Then I looked for some shop to have lunch. Fortunately, I found a pub and got in it. The pub has a garden behind of it and it was so beutiful under the blue sky. I had a seat in the garden, and had sandwiches and chips. The chips was so delicious! It brought out the natural flavor of the potato. I enjoyed them while listening the sound of birds and church bell. I made relax myself and enjoyed myself so much. In addition, I enjoyed myself with tea in the garden. It was a fruitful Saturday for me.
