Question about tense.

In the former journal entry, I wrote the following sentence; They (The police) checked if the driver was drunk or not, I was not drinking , of course, but I didn't feel good.
前回のエントリーで、私は次のような文章を書きました;:
警察官はドライバーがお酒を飲んでいるかどうか、確認していました。もちろん私は飲んでいませんでしたが、(車を止められて)いい気分ではありませんでした。
My question is that if I should write"I had not drunk" instead of " I was not drinking". In Japanese, we say" ~していませんでした”, but it doesn't mean my continuous behaviour. It is sometimes tricky when we translate Japanese into English and vice versa.
Would you tell me the difference between the two, and which sentence I should use? I'm confused a bit now.

Thanks in advance for your corrections and advice!
